Official Translators

Hi all!

I read this on the i-129f instrctions:

"Any document submitted to USCIS with information in a foreign language must be accompanied by a full english translation. The translator must certify that the English language translation is complete and accurate, and the he or she is competent to translate the foreign language into English"

And I wanted to know...

how is a translator supposed to show these things? or, is there a list of official translators accepted by the US govt?

Hi Alliwax,

Lets say that you have one document viz. the birth certificate completely in french, then you would have to take it to a translator, and have it translated completely to English. Next he would have to sign the translated document and the form I129f saying that he translated it.

Also, it would be best if you can have the translated document notarized. The translator can show this by just signing and dating the space given in the form. Also, there are no list of official translators accepted by the U.S

So notarize the translated documents.

Nope, anyone can do the translation, they just sign a statement that they are proficient in the foreign language and certify its accuracy.

We got my husband's translated in his country cause it was much cheeper. They accepted ours, had stamps and translators signature. We just attached it to the originals. Our marriage certificate was what needed to be done for petition

You simply include a statement at the bottom of your translation. Anyone that is fluent in both languages, including you, may do the translation.

From the USCIS website (https://www.uscis.gov/forms/forms-and-fees/general-tips-assembling-applications-mailing) :

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Date Typed Name
