If you have good, honest reason, I wouldn't think that it shouldn't be an issue. I have seen airline tickets with 18-24 hour layovers in Chicago and JFK, especially if you are taking one of the middle-eastern airlines: Eitihad, Qatar and transfer to an american carrier inside the USA.

Once you are in the USA, you can travel domestically anywhere you like.

Did you buy a one-way ticket, or round-trip? I ask, because if you purchased a One way ticket, with a return ticket to be purchased at a later date, you can play the wonderful game of US Airline tag. By skipping your connecting flight and avoiding the 2 day layover, you can book a flight from JFK to DFW (New York to Dallas) for about $100 through American airlines.

The caveat is, this only works with a One-Way ticket, because if you skip your connecting flight on a Round-Trip ticket, your return ticket will be cancelled.

I have never flown into JFK personally, but I know all of my inbound flights to DWF and ORD required me to pickup my checked bags before proceeding to my connecting flight. ( I had to re-check them after clearing customs). I suspect the same is with all international flights, because customs needs to scan the baggage.

Someone else with experience flying from Nigeria to the US via JFK hopefully can help answer this.

But I can say that if you were to skip your connecting flight and book a new flight through American you could save some money over staying at a hotel during a 2 day layover.

Domestic flights with American do have checked bag fees, but they aren't bad $25 for the first bag, $35 for the second bag.

Just my opinion. I personally would book a second flight and skip the connecting flight.
