We are bringing my FIL over from Iraq on an IR5. He is in his 70s and will be living with us.

I'm not sure if he would be able to qualify for Medicaid since we are "sponsoring" him and the cheapest ACA plan for his age is like $400/month for a bronze plan.

What do you all know about insuring older family members that have immigrated?

Hi there,

I would strongly encourage reading this thread carefully which describes the process to get elderly immigrants health insurance. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/582733-success-getting-healthcare-coverage-for-immigrant-parents-over-65/

The parent can be covered through the ACA, possibly cheaper than you have quoted depending on circumstances, but not with Medicare/Medicaid.

Sadly, as you can see not every situation will afford a cheaper rate of payment.

medicaid is a means tested benefit and he can not apply for that, you should know that from the affidavit of support. And medicare would be the same, considering he has never paid into the US tax system. You only option is private insurance or obamacare, in other words you have to pay for it. Not sure why you would think a brand new immigrant would be entitled to free healthcare

You are not entirely correct. Some states chose to give state funded medicaid to brand new immigrants depending on their income status.

Federally funded medicaid is a means tested benefits. A sponsor signs the AOS with the federal govt. and not the state govt.

Check with your states health department by going to the local county office. Some states chose to provide medicaid with state funds based on the income of the applicant. He anyways is not eligible for Medicare for sure. $400/month should atleast give you a silver plan. Some states also have low premium marketplace/obamacare plans where the premium could be as low as 20$ for low income people. You should do more research.
