Hi,
I have some issues with my name. Can you please let me know the following ?

Please note I have replaced the actual names with some random words.

My birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization has name as :
Firstname: Alpha

Lastname: Beta Charlie ( Yes, there is a space between the two words ).

Middlename: empty

Now the Social security has this way:
First name: Alpha

Lastname: Beta

Middlename: Charlie. This was created 16 years ago and this was what it has been all this time without any issues.

My Drivers license has:
First name: Alpha

Lastname: Beta

Middlename: empty . The DOL did not have enough spaces so that's why this was chosen.

Now after getting my cert of naturalization, I went to update SSA and they are saying they can update my last name to "BetaCharlie" ( Without a space) as they don't have enough spaces.

I am thinking of changing my last name to something else to prevent this headache in the future. I know that's a year long process!

So my question is it Ok to wait from updating SSA for the time being? Or if I just change it to "BetaCharlie" will it affect eVerify or IRS?

Thanks!

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

First of all, your legal name is the name on your Nat Certificate and your Birth Certificate. This will be the name on your passport and you should change your DL and SS card to match.

I don't know what the laws are where you live, but I have no idea why a name change would take a year... that seems very long. In most places, it takes a month or two. It's too bad you didn't change your name during naturalization.

My advice is to change your name only if you want it changed. Don't change it to something with which you're going to be unhappy. If you'd like a shorter name, then go ahead with the name change. If not, then let SSA do what they want, but if the passport office and DL office also think that your name is too long, then you're going to face this issue repeatedly.

As far as updating your SSA card now or later; that's not really going to matter unless you're currently job hunting. If your current card says you are not eligible for employment, that may cause some trouble. If not, then there should be no problem. Either way; you have your naturalization certificate to prove that you are a citizen.
