Student Loan - moving to US on K1 Visa

Does anyone have any experience of this, and might be able to explain to me what I must do?

Currently I have a percentage of my wage deducted each month in London, England, but will eventually be moving to America on the K1 to marry my fiancé and stay there permanently. I will not be working for a minimum of 5 months I expect?

Do I contact student loans and tell them, how much notice do they require, what proof do I need etc?

This is a US Immigration forum, not a UK Student Loan forum.

Yes contact them now and inquire.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

Considering this is a US immigration forum and for thousands of people immigrating from the UK this will be an issue, I didn't see that it would be problematic to post on here. It's an issue I'm sure many people using these forums have come up against.

Obviously I will contact the SLC but, that's like telling everyone on here to just contact the USCIS to find out information pertaining to their immigration.

Just before you leave the UK fill out a P85 and send it to the HMRC, you may receive a nice sum back. This tells them that you are leaving the country.

Once you stop your job the SLC should stop payments as you aren't working.

Go to the SLC website, and fill out the overseas assessment form and send that in with a cover letter explaining your situation in detail once you have left the US. Keep in mind that this process takes some time of back and forth. If you're corresponding from the US there will be a significant posting delay and they don't care about this at all. Keep a record of all correspondence with them... because they are absolute idiots. Once they receive that form typically you are off the hook until your next yearly assessment (when you must do it all over again), in my husband's case they sent him another form to fill out and to be signed by his third party support sponsor. That did little good, and they sent more threatening letters about arrears. Follow-up and very long distance phone calls resulted in more frustration - one stated he did the right thing another stated they wanted a letter signed by the sponsor sent to an email address. He did send such an email but this was actually pointless as the system finally updated from the form he sent directly to them the last time and his assessment is good until the next period.

The same rules apply to repayment just as they did in the UK regarding your salary coming in, but with obviously an exchange rate to keep in mind. Once your assessment says you make enough, you'll have to begin repaying again. And DO NOT under any circumstances fill out any sections on the SLC form involving bank details. The same applies for any third party sponsor.

Hope this helps and good luck with. :)
