Um...Was I registered for the military unknowingly?

Hi everyone. I moved here on a K1 fiance Visa, and am currently awaiting my green card. I received my work and travel "permits" a few weeks ago. Today I received a letter in the mail that I am very confused about. I am wondering if this is common to receive, and what this means?

"Dear registrant:

Please keep this letter or the wallet sized registration acknowledgment provided below as proof of your registration. Please review it carefully. Use the top portion of this letter to update and/or correct your information. Mark through any mistakes and write the correct information.

For Non-Immigrant Aliens: If you are on a valid visa and believe that you were registered in error, send this entire form and a copy of your I-94, I-95A, or Border Crossing Card (DSP-150) to: Selective Service System, P.O. Box 94628, Palatine, Illinois.

If you have questions about the Selective Service System, call 1-847-688-6888."

It has my name, birthday, and SSN. It's dated 1-05-2016. The "For Non-Immigrant Aliens" portion makes me believe this may be an error that occurs for several immigrants, but I really have no idea if I'm even still considered a "non-immigrant alien" at this point in my visa process. Do you think I should send the form and copy of my paperwork to the address or is this some kind of weird scam?

It sounds like you were registered for selective service which all men 25 and under who are living, or planning to live in the US, are required to do unless they're only here as a tourist or student. Did you apply for a driver license? They usually will register you if you ask. Here's the website so you can get more information...

When you filed adjustment of status, the form clearly states that you may be subject to being registered for selective service. Doing so would be a requirement anyway if you took up residence in the US between the age of 18-25. See page five of I-485. https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-485.pdf

It's good you are registered if you ever decide to apply for citizenship. You will have to show you registered.

if you are a male between 18-26 and have a green card then you are required to register for selective service. this is a requirement for citizenship later on. seems like you have. preserve the letter and the number. you will need it for citizenship application later.

And there is nothing to worry about - it would require an alien invasion for the USA to reinstate the draft. Probably not even then.
