1.) When can you obtain a SS# once you enter into US.?

1.) When can you obtain a SS# once you enter into US.? Immediately. Go to the SS office usually get it in a week.

2.) When can you get an State ID card.? Depends on state some want to see SS# but you have temp green card stamp in passport

3.)once you have that can you start to find a job ? Soon as you get SS# you are free to work. You need the SS# to fill out the I-9.

Bring the completed SS application to your nearest SS office along with your passport and birth certificate, you will get your card in about a week

Do not wait for one to be mailed to you, it will take forever or not arrive at all even if you checked the box on the DS260 for the card

Your states drivers license/state id web site will have all the requirements.

2.) DO you need to fill out an application for the SS#? Yes, SS-5 : https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf .

To legally work you will need SSN and I-551 Green Card.

yes bc you get the green card so it means you cant work till you get the green card ..?

You can use the I-551 stamp in your passport to start work immediately, it is for all intents and purposes a "green card" for finding work and you use that until your card shows up.

I've gone through the same process before originally on various work visas. The day after I arrived in the US, I immediately went to the nearest Social Security office with my passport/documentation and filed for a social security card. I got it within 3 weeks.

I was able to work before I got the SSN in the mail, but I couldn't get paid until I received the number. So I'll repeat that, a SSN is required to get paid on payroll but if you are a newly landed immigrant on a visa, you can start work immediately. But you do require a SSN to get paid.

In my case I arrived in the US 3 days before I started work, and worked for 3 weeks before I was able to get paid. I had to make sure I had enough savings on hand to cover living expenses until I started getting my paycheck.
