Interesting. I'll be honest the last time I learned about anything over there was likely elementary school? Grade 6 or something like that. And I think we spent more time on Mesopotamia.

Weird. I took Japanese history my senior year, but I just couldn't withstand sitting through Chinese history too... it is kind of a yawn fest. I think I took Middle Eastern history for the second time instead.

I enjoy learning about all cultures.

Especially through the food!

Middle eastern history.

Once the center of science, literature, and commerce. Reduced to a wasteland.

In Canada you learn a lot about many different cultures and their history. From Mesopotamia, Egyptian, Mayan, to Japanese, and the world wars.... You have to take special classes to just learn about history, but social studies is generally mandatory until grade 10ish. So you don't just learn history but the whole social culture. In grade 6 we also learned about France and had a french meal made by us. My daughter learned about India and Indian culture in grade 4 and went to an Indian restaurant. I remember Grade 11 SS class because we studied the holocaust. True video from the holocaust will never leave your mind's eye. People put their head down on the desk and refused to look, but these people had to suffer for it and our people died to protect them and the rest of the world from the same. The least we can do is remember everyone's sacrifice. But during all that you learn about government, laws, war, revolution, culture, etiquette, etc... It's far more encompassing than history I think. History is written by the victor.

In public schools they tend to call it social studies, in private history, just semantics really.

I think we learned about the Holocaust in 4th grade and again of course later on several times. 11th grade was AP US history for me. 9th and 10th tend to be world history.

Considering we had history AND social studies...

Again... the USA does their education system differently... I refer to education system rankings in the world vs having a measuring contest.

Also this quote:

Brilliant man. Proof that the education system works in some degree, should the student be motivated.

The common core's idea, is learning about other things through reading.

In depth, I don't totally disagree with this. I see the books that my kid reads.

The math portion of the common core is what I have a problem with.

ok, time to eat my CNY Gung Hay Fat Choy vegetarian meal # 1.....
