The striped bass is a migratory fish. (You numb nut).

They come to the Hudson to spawn.

The young spend the first 3-4 years of their lives in fresh water up the river. Leaving to the sea when they're about 10 lbs.

The only ones here are the schoolies now.

Season opens April 15.

The water will be about 45 degrees.

By July, the water is about 72. They swim out to the grand banks. Returning in late summer to fall. They fatten up around here, and go back to the Chesapeake bay. A hybrid school hangs around in north Carolina.

i dunno why i keep envisaging SAT throwing lit dynamite sticks off of his boat, 12 miles out. It's a constant vision. Boating takes time, takes away from the fishing time !

There is a trick to netting live moss-bunker (shad, menhaden) to use as bait. Toss a block buster firecracker in the water. The exclusion will stun the bunker, you throw the cast net. Get a couple dozen live bunkers to liveline.

But I usually use artificial bait.

Such as, a Mann's "stretch 25", or stretch 30. A Reliable bunker spoon. Or, an umbrella rig which I make myself, and has become legendary around here.

As we all know. NY spends more money on its forestry and fishery than any other state. Maybe more than California spends on its illegal immigrants....

Nah...

Anyway, there's plenty of ice fishing. Up north there's salmon. By my property, it's the world famous west branch Delaware river for trout and small mouth. Pike and pickerel are abundant. Up by the great lakes, there are muskies.

Salt water fishing is free, but you have to register.

Montauk, long island is a world famous fishing destination. Tuna, sharks, swords, marlin, everything is near the Hudson canyon. The world's largest underwater canyon carved out over 40,000 years by the Hudson river. You Google it, and it's visible on Google earth.

The Hudson canyon east wall, is about a 78 nautical mile ride from my dock.
