Hi all,

I'm looking for a tax software for my situation. My wife and I got married this pass year. I'm a USC and my wife is a foreigner. We'll be paper filing with a W-7 and a statement electing her to be treated as a resident. She did earn minimal income, so I think well need form 2555EZ. I don't plan on using itemized deduction since standard deduction for Married filing jointly is more.

I just need the software to input our information, so I can have nice and neat form to send in.

Thanks in advance.

Would Turbotax be a good option for a USC living abroad filing as 'Married filing separately'?

We need to complete my USC wife's last three years taxes (which haven't been filed yet) asap so that we can submit the i-864 affadavit of support and then the readiness for interview at the London embassy.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Josh

TurboTax Basic will do the job. Buy the software and install it. Then you can do a nice print out even though it will keep telling you you have an error to fix because you left the SSN blank. Online is not as forgiving and won't budge.

Fix all the errors it points out that are legitimate ignoring the big red exclamation point saying you need to fill in SSN. Then just go to print function and choose "print forms for filing". You can also "print all" and get masses of junk for your records. And you can "save to PDF" for future prints when needed.

Note. It will do Form 2555 for you, not the EZ version. That is longer and will be blank on all the pages asking about living quarter expenses, but it's still valid for your use.

I tried H&R Block software last year because they offered me a free copy. The return came out exactly the same as my TurboTax version, but I found it was not as intuitive or easy to use. So my side by side comparison strongly favored TurboTax.

Have you looked at the instructions page for that form? There is a separate PDF document that gives very detailed instructions for each line item. Go to this IRS link: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i2555ez.pdf
