While we are on the topic of SSN's. Do we need to get a new after being approved for GC (ie. are we supposed to get one that doesn't state valid for work only with DHS authorization?)

Hi everyone,

I received a few days ago a letter telling me that "my application for employment authorization and advance parole has been approved" and that "the form I-766 will be sent to you separately".

A few questions:

- is the form I-766 the ead card that everyone is talking about? See below.

- I missed the window to get my SSN when I got here so I've heard that I could only get it with once my work permit was approved... so do I have to wait for the card or can I go to the SSO with this letter of approval? See below

- does anyone know how long it takes for the card to be sent after the notice of approval? My wife and stepson got their EAD/AP combo cards about a week after receiving the online approval notice.

I'm really surprised because it seems like most people received their card without the letter of approval... and also the online status of my case is still "your case was received"... CONFUSED. Go with the hard copy, the online system is plagued with issues.

Thank you so much!

Lucie

(mod hat off)

Welcome to the forum.

For clarification, Form I-765 is the Application for the Employment Authorization Document (EAD).

http://www.uscis.gov/i-765

After you receive your EAD/AP combo card, take it, and a completed SS-5 application, to a SSA office. The SSN card you will receive will have the "Valid for work only with DHS Authorization" statement on it. The I-765/I-131 EAD/AP Combo card (or later Green Card (GC)) is the requisite DHS authorization document. After you receive your 2-yr conditional Green Card, you can take it, and a another completed SS-5 application to the SSA office and apply to receive another SSN card without the "Valid work..." statement on it.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

So basically, if we already got a SSN with the "Valid for work only with dhs authorization" statement on it, then getting the EAD and taking it back to the SS office will not replace that statement? Only the green card will? That's so weird because the EAD is a work authorization from DHS.

Hello everyone

My husbands ead was approved and our card was mailed yesterday. I haven't received a update on advanced parole or green card yet. Maybe I'll get word on the ap within the next few days.

I guess so, I know it sounds weird but it seems that you need the greencard in order to get the SSN without restrictions. I think the reason why the EAD can not replace that statement is because there are other types of visas that allow people to work without having a greencard like J, HB1, F1.

Right now I just want a SSN so I can start working soon as I didn't apply for one before my I94 expired. If I wait for the greencard to come in the mail I could lose opportunieties to find a job.

There is a phone app!? I am so happy I didn't know about that haha.

Makes sense! Thank you :)

I'm glad I never went in after receiving EAD or I would have been super annoyed to say the least.

That is a shitty situation. I'm sorry. I hope your GC gets here stat.

For the people who are wondering about the "Valid for work only with DHS Authorization" -

I've had my SSN with "Valid for work only with DHS Authorization" since my second year in my college. I've now graduated for two years and have been using it all the time with different jobs (government/non-government) and for different purposes(e.x. credit cards, utility bills). The only restriction I can see is this card basically tells employer that the person needs to provide additional document (EAD) in order for him/her to work here. Other than that, there's really no differences. However, it is for the people who are here on a temporary basis so I would say definitely to apply for a new one(everything will be the same except the additional text) once you are a permanent resident.
