Brought My mother to the US through IR5 visa

Dear Members,

Having gone through the immigration process, my mother finally got her immigrant visa. Last week I went to bring her back with me. At the immigration counter in NY, I handed the officer the sealed packet and he fingerprinted my mother and stamped the passport. I had already paid the $165 Green Card processing fee. My question is, Do i need to initiate the process for the physical green card? The instructions we received stated that the physical green card won't be processed until my mother arrives in the country. We were not told the process on how and when it will happen. Would anybody care to share their experience.

you already did, you paid the fee, now the waiting comes

in the meantime your mom has the stamp In the passport, which serves as the temporary proof until she receives the GC in the mail

don't worry it will come,my son has been here since december 19 hasn't recieve his as yet so its a waiting game.His SS was sent to us but still waiting on the green card.

Thank you for replying to my queries. Jamrep,you brought up my second question. Do I need to take her for her Social Security Card, or that comes in the mail automatically as well? Thank you.

Just an update. I received my mother's Social Security Card in the mail today. Good thing we didn't make that hectic trip to the SS Office. I wonder if there is a way to find out if the physical GC process has been initiated.

Great now all you have to do is wait a while,and yes the day she entered it was initiated.

My parents coming in as IR5 Feb 8th. We received their GC but still not SSN. Does it take more than 4 weeks? The problem is they went back to Canada to take care selling their house. So, I can't even take them to SS office......

Did you check the option to process SSN when they enter US on the immigrant visa application ?

If yes and it didnt arrive after 3 weeks, then you need to go with them to the SSN office and inquire.
