HI

I returned my DS230 along with the checklist as I thought the instructions said to take the DS156 & DS156K to the interview. I returned the letter with the checklist. Did I misread the instructions?

Thanks

Hi Adele, not certain if all embassy's require the same thing but here in Canada at the Montreal embassy that's all I was required to send back. The DS230 filled out but not signed and the checklist the rest I bring with me to the interview. Hope it helps. I'm sure someone from UK will have advice for you soon.

Don't feel silly Adele, you need to fill them out to bring with you. Just think of it as one less thing to worry about when getting ready to go to your interview. Just remember not to sign them. They need to be signed at the interview.

The DS-230 MUST be signed before it is sent back, along with the signed checklist. It is the DS-156 and DS-156K that must be completed but NOT signed - you sign them in front of the consular officer at your interview.

Here are the instructions as printed on the checklist:

STEP ONE. Please complete and return
immediately
to this office the enclosed form DS-230 Part I, Application for Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration.

STEP TWO. Please obtain
each
document listed below. Check off the box next to each document as you obtain it and sign the checklist when you have obtained all of them. Then, return only the signed checklist back to us. Please make at least one photocopy of each of your original documents to bring to the interview.

STEP THREE. Please complete,
but do not sign
, two copies of the enclosed Form DS-156, Nonimmigrant Visa Application and complete the single copy of the Form DS-156K, Nonimmigrant Fiance(e) Visa Application. Bring these along with all your documents at the time of the visa interview.

Once we have received and processed the completed Form DS-230, Part 1 and your document checklist, we will send you an appointment letter with an appointment date and time and further instructions to prepare for your interview day.

So you:

- Sign the checklist

- Complete and sign the DS-230 Part I

- Send them the checklist and completed DS-230 Part I

Next, you:

- Complete but DO NOT SIGN the DS-156 and DS-156K. Take these with you to the interview. You will sign them there in front of the consular officer.

The ONLY time you do NOT sign a form is when you sign the form IN FRONT OF the consular officer. SIGN EVERYTHING ELSE.

This does NOT apply to London. All of the Embassy's are different, so be careful when you're dealing with someone at a different Embassy than you because you can give them the wrong information. With London you must return the checklist, DS 156, DS 156K, DS 157 (if you are a male) and DS 230 pt 1.

Thanks that's what I thought it said just hope London and Canada are the same

I know you already know the answer to that but for anyone else reading this they are NOT the same! Every Embassy has their own way of doing it, some might line up but you should always be sure before you listen to what someone from a different Embassy had to do because you may need to do something different!
