Hi! Does anyone have further information regarding the process to get police certificates from the policia federal and the Secretaria de Segurança Pública (in Rio de Janeiro)? How long does it usually take? Are there any fees involved? Is this something we can do online or does my fiancé have to go somewhere in person? Sorry for all the questions! I'm finding the links on the consulate website confusing and don't want to screw anything up.

Hi,

you can get the certificate from Policia Federal online. Just fill the form and save as a PDF file. Regarding Rio de Janeiro I don't know. In Paraná and Santa Catarina I had to go personally to a Delegacia to get it. It took a few days and I had to pay a small fee (R$ 6,00).

Remember you'll need a state ID from the specific state in order to get the police certificate. I was living in Paraná for the last 5 years, but I never got a RG in PR, so I had to get the ID before I could get the police certificate. The ID took three weeks to get.

Thanks! We were able to get the Rio de Janeiro certificate online. Unfortunately, my fiancé has to get the one from the Policia Federal in person as when he tried online, it said "unavailable" and that he'd have to go in person.

UPDATE -- Turns out my fiance had to go to get his federal police certificate in person because someone else somewhere in Brazil has his same name. Whenever that happens, they make the person requesting go in person. He requested the police certificate today and should have it in 15 days. Just a heads up for all Brazil applicants. Plan ahead just in case!

Hi there. I just mailed my k-1 packet on feb 22. Now the waiting and planning for next step. My fiancé lives in rural northern Brasil in the state of Amazonas. I did an attachment to the I-129f about his address. The pobox for the village and his moms house. I've been sending test letters and none have arrived to date. Can people ever travel to the consulate and pick up the packet ?

Hi! When your case is received at the consulate, you'll get an email with all the information you need. Once you receive the visa, you're allowed to pick it up at the consulate. However, the only consulate that processes K-1s is in Rio.

Thank you for the information! But I can tell you that I had to take mine once, to get a job... and the point is: It depends where you were born here in Brazil, you have to go in person to Federal Police to get it. But, who is from São Paulo, like me, it´s possible to get it online! ;)

I hope all your process is going smooth!

I´LL START TO LIVE BACK AGAIN WHEN I´LL BE ON MY HUBBY´S ARMS, FOREVER AND EVER. UNTIL THERE, I DON´T LIVE. I SURVIVE. (L)

In Rio you can get the police certificate without having a state id.

I went with my brazilian husband to do this, they gave him a receipt and told him to come back in one week. No state id required.

IIFP - Instituto de Identificação Félix Pacheco

Address: R. Frei Caneca, 505 - Centro, Rio de Janeiro - RJ, 20211-020, Brazil
Phone:+55 21 2333-7537

Perhaps they have a similar office in other states?

I just googled this place in SP

Instituto de Identificação Ricardo Gumbleton Daunt
Police Department
Address: R. Cásper Líbero, 370 - Centro, São Paulo - SP, 01033-000, Brazil
Phone:+55 11 3311-3221

good luck!

I did the same in Parana: I asked for a police certificate using my Santa Catarina ID and they gave me a certificate stating I had no record in Parana State. I though it was ok and sent it to the NVC, but it was rejected. I lost at least 60 days because of it. Then I got a Parana ID and they issued a slightly different certificate, which the NVC accepted.

Maybe in Rio they issue the same certificate. Have you sent it to the NVC?

Thanks Joster, The NVC accepted the certificate from Rio (The one we got without state id). They actually said that they were missing the Minas certificate (the one we got with state id) even though it was attached to the email. They said just to bring that one to the interview and gave me a case complete notice.

The certificates look different, my portuguese is not so good so I will let my husband know and have him read both carefully and perhaps email the rio one to the consulate to ask if it is acceptable.

Many thanks for the heads up, we sure dont want delays, will post back when i hear more.

Hi Joster,

I emailed the consulate in Rio and asked them to please confirm the validity of both the state certificates from Rio and Minas. They replied both were valid.

Here is the place in Rio where we got the Rio state certificate in case anyone else might find this useful.
