I have read that a letter from an employer is sometimes needed at the border in the US to prove intent to return back to the UK after your trip. I do a voluntary job and my co-ordinator has agreed to write a letter for me stating when i am due back but we are both unsure as to what information needs to be included? and would a letter for a voluntary job be of any use anyway? Any help would be appreciated.

I suggest this:

RE: Casual Labourer Elizabeth Sheepingtonly's Upcoming Work Schedule

To Whom It May Concern;

Elizabeth Sheepingtonly is scheduled to return to our volunteer work schedule on or about the 13th of March, 2016. We don't really have a weekly hour booking on her, as its a casual job, she volunteers on a 'her whim' schedule each week.

Respectfully Submitted,

Thanks for the advice. I wont bother with a letter then! Just thought it may be useful.

I have to say this has to be one of the nastiest group of people I have come across on a forum before. I asked a perfectly simple question wanting a simple answer but NO you all have to start judging me, a person that you dont know! For all you know I could be wheelchair bound with a feeding tube or a terminal illness or have multiple limbs amputated or perhaps a mental illness? None of you know so none of you should be giving your opinion on any of that! There are plenty of medical conditions that mean a person cannot hold down a job but doesnt mean they cannot travel!

For your information the voluntary work I do is 3 afternoons a MONTH from my house answering the phone for a charity helpline usaually getting a handful of calls. I am sure there is a job out there doing the same that would pay me enough money to come off benefits working just 3 afternoons a month where if I am unable to do it then it is no problem! errr or NOT!

I asked a question it has been answered! No need to offer up any more opinions on the matter thank you very much!

....three afternoons a month....I'd guess that the UK economy or society would collapse upon itself if you weren't there answering the phone....and besides, if you really had all of those 'creative' and hope-for sympathy medical conditions, traveling and essentially living in the US would not be possible...so we know that you have none of those issues, save for the very last. Your story has changed more often than a traffic light....now, where's that phone number for the UK Dole Hotline.....I'd like to share something with them.

You are openly abusing the VWP by spending exorbitant amounts of time in living in the US and you are funding these escapades using taxpayer money that is suppose to be going to help cover the necessary living expenses of people who otherwise cannot make a living through work due to disabilities.

How do you not understand why people find this despicable?

And sorry, your vague and most likely fabricated/exaggerated illness does not give you a free pass from criticism when you so wantonly skirt around immigration guidelines and don't seem to have any concern for anything but yourself.

I'm not getting involved in this situation again. But good luck. I really don't think you want to actually move to the US though, since if you expect to be able to continue your lifestyle here, it's not going to end well for you.

I was not saying i have those conditions I was saying what if I did? there are plenty of ilnesses and conditions that mean someone cannot hold down a job but they can travel.

The money I am using has been saved up over the past 10 years. This post was not about how long I am spending there or how it is funded. It was a simple question.... What to put in a letter from and "employer" and would it be of any use as it is only voluntary what I do.

I think there are alot of people that may have a similar question and it could have helped others to answer it. Unfortunately the people that post on here seem to feel that they have a right to judge and ridicule people when they actually dont know the full story! and to be perfectly honest its none of anyones business!

As often as I do? I have been once....

Its a gamble I take. I could easily book a ticket and then not be able to travel. It happened to me on 3 occasions before on shorter haul flights in europe.

This is not what my post was about. I dont understand why people feel it is ok to delve into my life. This is a new post with a new question that had nothing to do with any of the issues from my previous post nor my health problems or how my trip is funded.

Technically she isn't skirting around immigration guidelines as she isn't immigrating. Well not technically at least but her intent and actions seem like she pretty obviously is effectively trying to do so through the VWP.

But other then that, bravo you hit the nail on the head!

By the way concernedesta, I want to congradulate you for somehow being the exact reason there are people out there who hate both people who accept disability payments from the government and foreigners who want to come to the US. Really, it's impressive.

Also don't even try to blame your lack of education on your disabiity. You can clearly use a computer and have plenty of free time and dispoable "income" so online classes are an option.

To be fair I have come across similar people win the US who know very week how to work the system. I made the mistake years ago of offering employment to someone who allegedly was ADD and had somehow been on benefits for years.

How he worked it I have no idea, nothing wrong with him apart from extreme laziness and a massive sense of entitlement.

I know of at least one other locally who is not lazy, does work, all cash in hand so as not to impact his benefits.

This thread makes me appreciate my fiance so much. She has ADD, severe depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder and lupus. Works full time and is going to class for her master's degree and I can't remember the last time she took a sick day.

Ironically the person she works for is a politician who is pretty big on giving out disability benefits.

But eh, I guess if they are truely going to people who need it I can't be too upset. She would be horrified by OP though.

I had bpd, depression and anxiety. My psychiatrist seems to believe that I'm in some sort of remission as I no longer exhibit symptoms. However at my worst it was incredibly dehabilitating. It took a major event to finally take time off and have a sick leave...that lasted all of two months lol
