Hello folks,

My wife and I find ourselves in a little predicament and I would like your feedback/opinion/experience on this.

My mother in law has her immigrant visa interview scheduled for Feb 9; my wife is her petitioner. Months ago she sent us her original supporting documents for us to send copies to the NVC, and just got new originals for the interview. Problem is, her birth year is different (1 year difference).

Apparently, because my mother in law was not born in the capital, it was usual for new babies to be registered some time after they were born. Therefore, her registration date and her actual date of birth are slightly different. Her country just recently switched policy on which of these two is the actual, oficial date of birth that shows in the birth certificate and all other official papers.

Now she has a complete set of new documents (birth certificate, police reports, marriage cert, etc.) , that say she was born one year earlier. Her passport still shows the old date because it was issues months ago, and the records of the USCIS and NVC also show the old date.

So what should she do? Obtain a new passport as well (this will invalidate her old passport) with the new date, and explain the whole thing at the interview or go with the old passport, and explain the whole thing because this is the passport they have on file?

Thank you!
