Can you travel out of state after submitting N400 and before biometric / interview appointment

There is no limitations about short traveling in the U.S while your N-400 is pending but be prepared to arrive back before Biometric or any other actions taken on your case.

You could also register / signup for your USCIS case update on the USCIS website so you know if they send you a Biometric Notice to your home address. In case you won't make it back before your schedule date, you need to contact the USCIS to reschedule your Bio or Interview Appointments but it'll delay your case considerably. Biometric and Interview will be at the USCIS field office local to you based on the address you use to file the N400.

Like Maria2012 said, I would suggest waiting until you have your Biometrics notice so you know when you need to be there. I wouldn't risk missing the appointment. And do sign up for text/email status updates as well like jam2016 said but note that you may or may not get a text or email about the Biometrics appointment (I didn't).

Hi Maria

Does the online case status for I-797 changes to "scheduling for biometric appointment" before you received the letter in the mail? or does it say only case received?

Do you track your N-400 application status using the case number on the I-797 or biometric letter?

I hadn't registered online before I got the letter so I don't know. All I know is that the bio letter is printed a couple of days after your checks are cashed. After bio you'll have a good month until you get an interview letter

I used the receipt number on the NOA (I-797) to track my case but my online status never changed to "fingerprinting appointment is scheduled" - I just received the Biometrics notice in the mail.
