Back to topic: You can't force someone who has no interest in learning to pay attention and learn if you hired a personal private tutor and bought leather-bound books with gold-plated titles for him, and there is no circumstance that prevents someone from paying attention and learning if he wants to. It is not the teachers who do not care, it is the students. Nobody can educate a student who doesn't care.

Um, did you miss the part where I said they DIDN"T care. The girl was in high school and didn't know how to read. The guy was on his way to becoming a gangbanger.

Google Normandy High school, Jennings High School, Marshall grade school(closed now), etc. She's taught in some of the more poorer district in St. Louis and made such a difference she had to retire twice(they called her back after her first retirement).

I met one of her students. Young lady working her way through college. Single mother who wouldn't have graduated high school if my mother didn't go the extra mile. They can be reached if someone puts in the effort.

why are you talking about ridiculous things like gold bound books and paint? why all of a sudden do you keep repeating 'throwing money at' kids who don't care? they are kids living with multiple high risks everyday. it takes a very special sort of teacher of get through to kids like this but these teachers do exist. i'll take a positive solution over grumbling 'worthless kids screw em' which is essentially your take (on more topics that just public education btw). such an attitude is not helpful. you might as well champion mass executions of poor (not really poor) inner city kids to save 'throwing money' at lives wasted/no future. put the gang bangers and cops out of business, right?
