Documents that need translating

Hi everyone,

I am from the Netherlands, but living in the UK. I have my original birth certificate and later on I am getting my police records as well. I wanted to check. Once I have got both documents translated, will it also have to been notarized? On some websites it says that it does need to be notarized and some sites it doesn't. Please help. Notarizing in the UK costs about £120.00 if done by the public notarizing service. So if it does need to be notarized, does anyone also know where it could be done cheaper? Thanks for your help.

I'm assuming this is for the embassy stage as your timeline suggest you already sent in your 129F? You should ask your embassy if they are okay with a notarized translation or if they want a certain company to do your translation because it seems to vary from embassy to embassy. For example in Sweden the embassy only accepts translations made from a certain company and won't accept translations made by yourself that has been notarized.

Are you applying for the k1 visum? I can only tell you about my experience with the US embassy in Amsterdam so I am not sure if it hold true when you'd go to the US embassy in the UK, but maybe it still helps. I have a certified international birth certificate (it has French, German and English translations) and this document is signed and stamped by the Dutch municipality. I did not notarize it. I submitted a copy of this to the embassy and showed the original when I went in for my interview in Amsterdam. I had no problems in getting my k1 visum.

Hi Sanne,

Just to make sure I understand it correctly. Is it the International extract of the birth certificate that you are referring to? I have attached the screenshot from the Dutch governmental website to this message.

Thanks again.post-218840-0-67578600-1453754577_thumb.jpg

It is the international version (3rd paragraph of your attachment).

I also attached a part of the k1 instructions stating that the Amsterdam US embassy wants you to collect the international version (doc. a).

Hi Sanne,

Thank you for that. I had seen that on the Amsterdam US embassy website, but where could I see the example doc. a? Cause I couldn't find that on the website or where would I be able to order it? I am originally from The Hague. Sorry to be a pain or that I am stupid :D

Thanks so much Sanne.

You are welcome!

I attached an example of the international birth certificate. In my case, I made an appointment with the municipality and explained my K1 situation and that I needed an international birth certificate. I am not sure how this would work if you live abroad like you do, but maybe you could call the The Hague municipality office to find out?

Good luck!

Almost all forms we get from our government are available in English.

I strongly suggest you get the international form of both the birth certificate and the police record.

Don't forget to bring them to the US once you get them back. You'll need the birth certificate again for the AOS part.

Thanks for your help and tips. I am about to request the international birth certificate extract so that's sorted. I am just wondering about the police record that I need to request. On the Dutch website, it says that not the entire document will be in English, just the headers but not the statement (see attached). Could you share the link where I could request this international form for the police records? I do see at the bottom a small translation in English, would that be sufficient?

Thank you very much in advance. I appreciate your help.voorbeeld-vog-2015_tcm123-529365.pdf

Also you mention that I shouldn't forget to take it with me to the US for the AOS, but does this mean that after you went to the embassy for the interview that I will get those documents back? Or would I have to request two copies of each?

You should get them back from the embassy/consulate after you're interview. As long as you bring copies. (might want to check on the British tread to verify this).

I Just looked at them again. The birth certificate is fully translated into English. (by means of an second page to the document. The VOG is almost an complete translation. It states in Dutch what you applied for and what the outcome is. In English it states that their is no objection (general) and that it is a certificate of good conduct.

https://www.justis.nl/producten/vog/certificate-of-conduct/#paragraph5

Gives you most answers you're looking for.

As to whether this enough or not, I do not know. It's consulate specific. Maybe you can contact them and ask them. It's enough for the Amsterdam consulate.

You can request the international 'verklaring van goed gedrag' at the municipality just like the birth certificate. Bring this document with you (or send it to The Hague since you live in the UK?) so that they know exactly what they need to provide and why.

And yes, make copies of everything and take them to your interview. Take all the original forms with you to the US after approval.
