I had thought a little bit about this when the PB hit the big number recently. It was interesting in that the research I did, many states require that the winner is identified. If I ever won (not likely since I rarely ever buy a ticket), I would sit with an attorney and find out how I could get around the identification rules. Other than that, I would move away as soon as I could.

Solution:

If I ever win, I don't claim it immediately. Instead, I go and buy a house in a state that allows anonymity. I move there, and then claim my winnings anonymously. Problem solved.

Maybe someone knows who it was who said "The lottery is a tax on the Stupid."

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

How do we know that the victim wasn't a gun owner? Do gun owners regularly sit facing their doorway with gun off safety and pointed at the door just in case someone shoots the door open? From the OP that sounds like the only way a gun might have saved this poor guy.

I had an internet female friend on fb who lives in Texas. We had been friends for about 8 years via a discussion board. She told me that she sits in her chair at night watching tv with her AR-15 right by her side. I refer to our friendship in the past tense because she unfriended and blocked me on fb when I told her how ridiculous I thought her views on guns were.

It is a scourge on society. Not only do the majority of big-lotto winners end up losing their money inside of a decade, but the lotto disproportionately attracts those who can least pay for it: the poor. A lot of people play the lotto and don't spend much on it but a small but meaningful percentage of people spend all of their disposable income on it, leading to personal tragedy. It's really a bad thing for society and particularly injurious on the poor, who are already less capable at winning in life than the rest of us and the lotto is one extra thing they need to work through/avoid being entangled by.

The lottery is a scourge, especially to lower income people. About 25yrs ago I used to work part time at a local convenience store for some extra cash. It was sad how many folks would come to the store on pay day and blow their whole paycheck on scratch tickets. I would try to talk some of them into stopping but to no avail. They knew what they were doing but couldn't stop themselves, it was like a drug addiction.

Getting lower income minorities to pay for college for rich white kids. The lottery

lol, but it's true.

I never played the lottery, always knew it was a tax on those bad at math. I didn't militantly hate it like I do now until I saw this bit by John Oliver, and then googled the stats a bit on who plays it. The amount of money spent on the lottery is beyond crazy.

They knew what they were doing but couldn't stop themselves, it was like a drug addiction.

It really is terrible. I don't even see it as a moral issue, but just one that is a net negative on society.

That video by John Oliver is amazing. It shreds the lottery in an entertaining way.

What really drives me crazy is how much the news covers these things. They could not shut up about powerball recently, so you end up seeing pictures of people in massively long lines all desperate to throw their money away for nothing.

He should have taken the lottery money and moved far far away to start a new life.

There are very safe enclaves in and around Atlanta, can easily get a house for less than 90K in decent condition. I wonder why he not do this over the xMas holiday ?

His dad actually won, but he claimed the money cause dad owed the IT'S major money.

is that a Georgia Taxing Authority ? Smart Move, maybe, but why he not move his family elsewhere, even rent a 10 acre spread with 2 old mobile homes but a clear line-of-sight for the kill zones? Sheesh.

Eh - if'n it was me, I would have picked up some older thompson sub-machine guns (5 or 6) plus 5000 rounds o ammo. Then trained my family to use them. Guns Matter ! Try some, today !
