Filing a Tax Return in Canada while in U.S.

You need to call them about the GST credit. You will owe everything they paid you after the date you moved. Writing a letter will not work (I tried.)

Did you work in the USA? or make over the threshold to file?

I actually phoned CRA to discuss the GST credit with them. I failed to inform CRA I left Canada in November (my mistake), so I received a few credits in-between November and January. They actually requested that I write a formal letter with name, DOB, SIN, new phone number, new address, date I left Canada, and payments received. I also included a cheque for the amount my account had been credited from these payments since I had left the country.

They have yet to cash the cheque, so I'm not sure exactly what else to do in this situation. I got passed around to a few different people on the phone so the whole situation was a bit confusing.

Anyone else have experience with this?

I returned the cheques they sent me and wrote a letter just like you stated and they sent me a NEW cheque to my US address for the total. In the end I deposited into a Canadian account and paid them back with that.

Although this thread is a little old I just went through this with the CRA and thought I'd add my experience. I updated my address/immigration date in August 2017, AND called to CF the move in September, and still managed to receive my direct deposit GST October 6th.

The CRA rep on the phone mentioned they are prearranged about 2 months in advance, so she wasn't surprised by my situation, but since I wasn't eligible that the sooner I pay back the better. Since I forgot to get new cheques when I amalgamated my CAN accounts before leaving (less bank fees) I asked about online payment which she said was fine. To do this you just set up an online payment under 'CRA Tax Installments' (there should be a list you can search from) with your account number being your SIN. You do however have to call them within 48h of the payment so they can mark it as a GST reimbursement.

The number to call CRA if needed is 1-800-387-1193

The whole process has been a little annoying and the department seems slow to act, so just stay on top of it. They really like paying out that GST lol.

This is great thank you!

The exact same thing just happened to me and I was super annoyed because I had moved in November changed my address with cra in early December and also called them to ask why my online cra account still shows it paying out credits and the lady was rude and said it takes 24 hours ...lol sure. Got a payment January 5th 2018! So I am definetly going to try to do what you suggested above. Thanks again!

I also jsut got my January 2018 payment, so back to making phone calls lol.

At this point I've made 3 calls to the child&benefits line AND a call to the CRA tax line to take care of the transfer/cancel these damned things. I luckily didn't get any guff, but 6 months later I kind of expect these cancelations to go through. Apparently if you don't catch it before they're scheduled (about a month or 2 in advance) your SOL.

If you need here's a little more info on the online payments.  ANY of those payees are fine, you just need to eventually call to make sure the money goes to the right place - last time I ended up calling about 3 weeks later, so there's no real 48h deadline, it'll just sit in your account.

The GST phone line also changed in the last few months if needed: 1-800-959-1953

Hey Girl!

So get this. They sent me a notice stating i owed the alberta tax credit i received which was a shocker!!! because that was 1 of 2 payments i needed to pay back. I simply had to login to Canada.ca and search for "make a payment" and i paid the payment with my SIN# and debit card (had to select visa debit for it to work) and that was that!

On the other hand my GST was still showing as payable again for APRIL so i did phone that one in! and i did the same for the January payment - paid it online. The lady on the phone told me i wont receive an april payment.. we will see about that. but if i do than i am glad its easy to pay online.

I printed the receipts that show the payment.

The  "my payment" link had a selection of what you are paying back so for gst you click on child&taxbenefits and than gst so im assuming everything will go to the correct place.

That was much easier than expected and i thank you so much for your help!
