Some airlines can be very picky about this.

International travel is particularly problematic if you happen to fly through a country where taking your husband's name isn't the norm; they may give you a hard time even with a marriage certificate. But in general, you should be OK with a marriage certificate or a certified copy (something that looks official, not just a photocopy).

Of course some people will tell you that they had no trouble at all, and that they were not asked for anything. And, you may not be asked for anything, but we're talking about what problems you might run into.

Although rare, some airlines have been known to force you to purchase a new ticket if your reservation doesn't match your name. The worst example I've read about was Air France making someone buy a new ticket because their passport had a middle name on it and their ticket did not; that, I think, was an extreme example and is unlikely to happen, but it shows that it can be a problem.

Again, I think if you have a marriage certificate that clearly shows your old name and your new last name, you should be fine.

Flyer Talk is a good forum to ask this question on.

Thanks Jimmy.

I'll ask on there, and maybe PM you about what's going on so to not take this off-topic

Hi all,

I had my interview today, 6/20/16. I was approved! While I was in the waiting room for so long it was fun to see people go in, and leave happy... and then I asked a lady who finished up what day her Oath ceremony would be - and she said Friday - so quick. I was hoping mine would be that too.

My husband and I got there around 1pm, for my 1:45pm interview. I wasn't called back until 2:30pm, hah. My interviewer had me take an oath, take out my State ID, Green Card, and "all passports". She only looked at the recent one. We reviewed my application together. She had some questions about my name change (my husband and I changed our last names to a new, shared last name, by court order last year). When it came to asking if I would be willing to affirm the whole oath, I said no, that I was asking for a modified oath based on conscientious and religious objections to bearing arms and serving in the Armed Forces. She asked for a letter about it. I asked if she wanted one written by me, or by religious leaders. She took both. She then crossed out the two lines in the Oath that I'm not able to affirm & had me initial beside them.
We then moved on to the civics test. My questions were...

1. When was the Declaration of Independence adopted?

2. What is one of the two longest rivers in the U.S.?

3. What do we call the first ten amendments to the Constitution?

4. Who lived in America before Europeans?

5. Who is the current Speaker of the House?

6. How many years do we elect a President?

I got them all right :)

Then she asked me to say "Who is Abraham Lincoln?" and then I wrote "Lincoln was the President in the Civil War."

She then congratulated me and let me know I could join the oath ceremony on Friday the 24th at 11AM if that worked for me. I told her it did (my boss is very flexible :).

I went back to the waiting room to wait for my oath ceremony notice. About 10 minutes later, an officer came out (not the one who intervieed me) and said "If you want your old name to be your middle name, you're going to need a judicial ceremony." I said "oh, my name is already changed". I showed her my name change decree. She said, "oh, let me make a copy of this". Kind of weird. She came back a few minutes later with the oath ceremony notice - this Friday the 24th at 11am! My application was received on February 25th so that makes my process 4 months less a day.

I will definitely share how it went - i am curious to see how it'll work with a modified oath, if they'll have me say it separate from the group, or what. I'll update.

Prayers for speedy processing for everyone still waiting (L)

I got them all right :)

What does "modified oath" mean?

It means that I asked for a deletion of "bearing arms on behalf of the US if required by law" and "performing noncombatant service in the US Armed forces", due to being religiously convicted to non-violence and peacemaking.

Others ask for a modified oath to say "solemnly affirm" instead of an Oath, or ask for "so help me God" to be removed.

Hi guys, my interview is coming up and I'm starting to have all these little doubts in my head! So here's a silly question: in Brazil we don't really have a middle name. We have "name + mother's last + father's last". So my full name is Erica de Oliveira Ribeiro. For both my greencards AND the n400 I didn't really know what to do with it when filling out the forms, so I just put "De Oliveira" as middle name, even though it's not exactly a middle name!

Then I noticed on my brazilian passport that it says "name: Erica", "last name: de Oliveira Ribeiro".

So my question is, at my interview, should I tell the IO that "De Oliveira" is not exactly a middle name and should be put as last name or it doesn't really matter? Cuz I think on your naturalization certificate they don't really specify name, middle name, last name, do they?

As far as I know it just shows your full name on the certificate without specifying what's middle, what's last. So should I mention it to the IO or it doesn't make a difference?

And one more question: do we have to bring our social security card for the interview?

Thanks!!

Finally I have a chance to share my interview experience at the Chicago Office.

My interview was scheduled for 9:00am, I was called in about 9:10am. He made me swear an oath to tell the truth. He went directly for the civics test and I passed the first six questions and he said he was surprised I was the first person to get "who is the governor of your state" question right, some applicants said Rahm Emmanuel lol. Then he had me take the speaking and written test. They we went over the yes and no questions in the form N400. He asked if I had travelled since I applied and I said yes, so he double-checked my passport and updated my forms he had with him. He asked about where I worked, and where lived, both downtown Chicago and he said he was surprised I live two blocks away from the USCIS office and told me about how he always wanted to live downtown. He asked about what I did for a living and I explained to him. We joked about life in Chicago and why I don't have any kids yet (My wife is in graduate school so she isn't ready yet). He asked if I wanted to change my name, originally on the form I checked yes, but I told him I don't want to go through the hassle so I will keep my name and he said I can always give people my nickname.

After that he made me sign my passport photographs, sign the end of my n400 application. He asked me what extra documents I had with me and I told him I had updated bank statements, extra insurance docs, letter from employer and whatnot and he told me never mind he doesn't need them so he didn't even ask to see it. He was very lively and friendly and he even joked about himself having an accent.

At the end he gave me form N-652 with "you passed the tests..." and "USCIS will send you a written decision about your application" checked. Neither option A - the congrats you passed option nor option B - A decision cannot be made yet; were checked.

He said he needs to send it to his supervisor to look over, and when he gets it back, he will recommend me for approval.

The only mistake I made was not to ask him when I should expect a notification from USCIS. So now the wait for a response begins

Hey Erica!

I think at your interview you should tell your IO that De Oliveria is part of your last name. Today during my interview they had me verify information for my naturalization certificate, including that first, middle, last names were in the right sections. So yeah, you'll have a chance to explain that 'middle name' should be blank, and that there should be two last names in the 'last name' section.

I brought my social security card today but my interviewer didn't ask for it. good luck!!

Yo ryna and rogperdiaz! My wife had an update for her status to be in-line for the Oath ceremony this afternoon. :) Hopefully the notice arrives sooner than later in the mail.

Oath Ceremony Will Be Scheduled

We placed you in line for your oath ceremony and will send you a notice for Receipt Number NBC*000000000, with the date, time, and location of your oath ceremony. You should receive your notice within 30 days of its mailing date. Please follow the instructions in the notice. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.

I'm glad to see some movement in Orlando. Hopefully, your wife's notice was part of a big stack of approvals that are waiting to be entered and will be finished this AM.

And, just curious...

Is your wife requesting her maiden or married name on her certificate? My wife has an infoPass next Tuesday to try to straighten out the (non-)name change issue in her case and we're just trying to see if it's a general policy in Orlando to send people requesting their married name to judicial ceremonies or if her IO is just making up his own rules as he goes. If it's a general policy, there is no point in arguing it but if he is applying different rules in her case just because he can or because he made an error, she wants to speak to a supervisor before it drags on too much longer. I can understand (sort of) different policies in different offices, but people in the same office should expect the same set of rules, IMO.
