i haven't seen compton yet, but that strikes me as the type of movie that appeals to a pretty narrow audience (and I don't think it's narrow because of race, but personal taste and when you grew up). but what you're saying about malcolm x/training day rings true for me. training day is largely forgettable. except for denzel's performance. i haven't seen that movie in years but those final denzel scenes are really burned in my memory. he was that good. he deserved an oscar for that performance. similarly, malcolm x is a movie that he deserves the same recognition for. he owned that movie, and imo, malcolm x is one of the best movies that has come about in my life time but the reality is that malcolm x was too controversial a man to garner a wide enough public interest. i wonder how many people would never watch it because the don't have any interest in the subject or feel malcolm x isn't 'for them' and similarly, how many movie lovers viewed compton the same way..

Me either, but I was just saying the contrast between the two. Problem is, white people as a whole still look at X like he was the enemy. MLK was very passive and his message could be taken in by anyone. But I've heard white people praise compton, which made no real sense to me.

See I love the story of Selma, but wasn't that impressed with it personally. i thought that it could have been better.

I remember in the 80s and 90s when actresses were crying out that better roles for females needed to be written. A renaissance of female roles seemed to come.

Personally I no longer equate the Oscars for quality of film (Shakespeare in Love anyone?). As much as I love him as an actor, make a film of Tom Hanks reading the nyc phone book and it'd probably get nominated.

1) There is no good ol' boys club in this instance, this is bend-over-Hollywood that gives extra bonus points to all things non white male to feel good about itself. You are 180 degrees off. Your bias will never allow you to see this of course, it does not fit in with what you want to be true.

2) There were lots and lots and lots of movies from every random direction that could have been given a nomination and did not.. Maybe the best ones got nominated? Like I said have no fear, from now on they will make sure all minorities are covered regardless of quality - and isn't that what really matters when giving out awards?

Because he's an extraordinary actor who won for acting like a thuggish black man. That's it. Not inspiring or disparate. Not losing weight or transforming himself like he did in Malcolm X(he should have won for that one). He won for, being a ignorant thug with a badge. That's what it took for him to win. He played a role that most intelligent black people try to escape.

I get that, and samuel l was nominated for being a thug in pulp fiction, though his partner travolta didn't even get that and at least he was a well-spoken thug. I still thought denzel did a really nice job in training day

Except that comparing the two is apples and oranges. Whites don't discriminate against whites,

whites (if they can jump) can get in the NBA at any time, who is preventing it ? Many blacks (who are great actors) can not get a nomination from whites.

So if blacks are objectively better at rates disproportionate to their population in one area, maybe they are objectively worse at rates disproportionate to their population in another? Why are there more blacks than the population would hint at in the NBA? Why are there less than it would hint at in the NHL? Why are asians disproportionately represented in classical music? Why are most rappers black? Why aren't there many black lacrosse players?

Have you actually studied, or even so much as briefly googled, the popularity of acting among blacks enough that you can take this quantifiable figure, apply it to careers in acting by blacks against non-blacks in the population, and projected out how many acting awards they should be getting in an average year or decade? And while doing so have you also adjusted for age; e.g. if the average oscar winner has been in the industry for 25 years you would have to adjust for racial demographics in acting over time and not just a snapshot of today so that a trend line of actual vs projected can be looked at.

If you are living in oppression you really don't need statistics for it to be real. You live it and no one can argue with your experience of

oscars are biased, because of who selects the nominees and winners. 94% white, 77 percent male, average age 62. makes perfect sense.

Given the numbers, it's perhaps unsurprising that Ava DuVernay was not able to gain enough votes for best director of Selma, or that none of the 15 directors, cinematographers or screenwriters nominated for an Oscar this year were female. Only four women have ever been nominated for best director, with one win.
