Doesn't really make too much sense to compare to the US population as a whole. That assumes that actors are a representative sample of the nation.

A better baseline would be the breakdown of all actors credited with roles in films over the same time period, including multiple entries for the same actor in multiple films. That accounts for the real distribution of performances, which may be more representative of the distribution of "best" performances.

1) There is no good ol' boys club in this instance, this is bend-over-Hollywood that gives extra bonus points to all things non white male to feel good about itself. You are 180 degrees off. Your bias will never allow you to see this of course, it does not fit in with what you want to be true.

2) There were lots and lots and lots of movies from every random direction that could have been given a nomination and did not.. Maybe the best ones got nominated? Like I said have no fear, from now on they will make sure all minorities are covered regardless of quality - and isn't that what really matters when giving out awards?

I think that it is one thing to call things racist that really are racist, but when you call things racist that are not, it is like the boy who cries wolf - kind of makes your real cries to be taken less seriously (not saying it's right, just that it is how it is).

Everything is racist, you just have to look harder and have a creative mind.

Forum cut my original comment short somehow. I meant to say: this is a good point and this thread has, defying belief of how the internet is supposed to work, actually changed my opinion on BET. I realized I have no problem with the latino channel on hulu--I simply ignore it and never click it--but it didn't bother me, so I wondered why. Maybe because BET is more notorious, but I see it was created in 1982 and regardless of how things are now the "screw you we'll make ourselves a network then" is a compelling argument and undoubtedly made sense less than two decades after the civil rights act.

As for this year I saw straight outta compton and it was a good movie but no performances that really were impressive. Good, sure, but oscar? No. I think for Oscar you watch a movie and you're like damnit that person earned an oscar. I saw first third of concussion and had the same opinion. Two movies I saw recently, catching up on old, were usual suspects and training day. After watching both, oblivious to the fact spacey and washington won oscars, I thought those were amazing performances and deserved accolades, so I google and low and behold. Was there a denzel-in-training-day performance from will smith this year? Heck no.

as to Banal Barry - I always thought he wasn't Black Enough to handle the fixing of Black Problems in America. Which, alas, is the big thing that African-Americans were clamoring about, before the first election.

Fast Forward 7 years, and Banal Barry, at least to me, is NOT Black enough to be a purveyor of change. Sure, he talks purty, but that's not his blackness seeping out...

And no, I'm not giving examples of his failures to better the African-American communities. He's failed them, in toto. I had some hope, at year 5, that he would embrace his Whiteness and be a purveyor of positive changes for the USA, but that hasn't happened. I have hope, he'll embrace his Whiteness and do something really really really stellar.

The President can only accept his whiteness as much as people allow him to be white. Remember, he's mixed with black, not Asian. If he was part Asian and white it would have been different. He is a biracial person but society determineso what he identifies as. If his skin color was a lot lighter, he would possibly be able to identify with and be treated more like a white man instead of a black man.

Let's not forget you have people right here on VJ calling him a Kenyan. How can he be white while being called a Kenyan all the time?

i haven't seen compton yet, but that strikes me as the type of movie that appeals to a pretty narrow audience (and I don't think it's narrow because of race, but personal taste and when you grew up). but what you're saying about malcolm x/training day rings true for me. training day is largely forgettable. except for denzel's performance. i haven't seen that movie in years but those final denzel scenes are really burned in my memory. he was that good. he deserved an oscar for that performance. similarly, malcolm x is a movie that he deserves the same recognition for. he owned that movie, and imo, malcolm x is one of the best movies that has come about in my life time but the reality is that malcolm x was too controversial a man to garner a wide enough public interest. i wonder how many people would never watch it because the don't have any interest in the subject or feel malcolm x isn't 'for them' and similarly, how many movie lovers viewed compton the same way..

See I love the story of Selma, but wasn't that impressed with it personally. i thought that it could have been better.

I remember in the 80s and 90s when actresses were crying out that better roles for females needed to be written. A renaissance of female roles seemed to come.

Personally I no longer equate the Oscars for quality of film (Shakespeare in Love anyone?). As much as I love him as an actor, make a film of Tom Hanks reading the nyc phone book and it'd probably get nominated.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a 2014 comedy film directed by Wes Anderson. The screenplay by Anderson is from a story by Anderson and Hugo Guinness, inspired by the writings of Stefan Zweig. It stars Ralph Fiennes as a concierge who teams up with one of his employees (Tony Revolori) to prove his innocence after he is framed for murder.
