Actually you're wrong about your statement about having a discussion about race in this country. The reason why is because 1. white people who want to talk about it only want to in the vein that they get to point the finger at black people. No one wants to talk about the systematic institutional discrimination that people of color face every day. And 2. You want to have a discussion about it without the input of, you know, black people? Unless it's Dash or some other self loathing black person, our input about what we experience on the regular is dismissed. You sound like the guys at Fox News with their diversity panel. The one that talks about black issues, with 4 white men and one white woman. Because that makes sense.

Edit: Everyone knows Hollywood has a history of whitewashing everything. That's why we have movies in Africa that don't have any dark skinned people in it. Or in Hawaii with no Hawaiians(Emma Stone don't count with her 1/16th Hawaiian). Give it 20 years, MLK will be some white dude with blonde hair and blue eyes.

**This Is So Much Worse Than Whitewashing**

*Why I'm Boycotting Hollywood's Newest Movie "The Forest"*

As an Asian-American, I am no stranger to seeing my people whitewashed on the silver screen. It happened in "The Conqueror" when John Wayne played Genghis Khan and it's scheduled to repeat in 2017 when Scarlett Johannson stars as as Major Motoko Kusanagi in "Ghost in the Shell."

But NONE of these films compares to the whitewashing in Hollywood's newest movie "The Forest." This is by far the most sickening, low-class piece of **** I have EVER seen. Before I talk about why this is possibly the worst whitewashed Asian movie in history, you NEED to understand the context of this story and what "Forest" this movie is referring to.

Here's the scoop.

West of Tokyo, Japan at the base of Mt. Fuji is a stretch of forest called Aokigahara. Aokigahara is known for its lush and green foliage that remains fertile all year long. Walk along the trails and you'll see petite trees that ebb and flow with the wind and a ground painted with a thick layer of furry moss. But underneath this excessive life, woven between the leaves and bushes, is the exact opposite of life: death.

For 30 years, residents of Japan have come to the Aokigahara forest to commit suicide. Most hang themselves, others overdose on medication, and a select few hide deep in the woods and force themselves into dehydration and starvation. Rotting corpses hang from the branches and skeletons with the clothes intact are scattered all around.

In Japan, suicide is a national crisis. While America ranks 50th in yearly suicide rates, Japan is at a chilling 17th place with an estimated 70 suicides per day. Some are pressured into suicide by the stress of Japan's overwhelming work culture while others do it because of unemployment. One major factor that isn't as highly recognized due to Japanese social stigma is depression and mental health.

Japan's rigorous culture of conformity heavily stigmatizes those with mental health issues. Many Japanese have grown content with suicide and see it as a "reasonable" solution. In reality, suicide is an epidemic and is the second leading cause of death in the country.

*Why "The Forest" Is Worse Than Regular Whitewashed Hollywood Films*

"The Forest," a HORROR movie which stars a BLONDE WHITE GIRL, takes place in Aokigahara. So not only did they whitewash a movie and sidestep the opportunity to cast an Asian actress, they COMPLETELY DISRESPECTED the fact that Suicide Forest IS A REAL ****ING PLACE where the Japanese go to end their life. And it's not like these suicides happened 400 years ago. This is happening RIGHT. NOW. Over one hundred bodies are found in Aokigahara every single year.

To put this into perspective, imagine if a white-skinned Italian film director made a movie about police brutality and anti-Black violence in America, filmed the movie in America, but cast non-Black Italian actors.

The ABSOLUTE WORST thing about this film is the erasure of mental health issues among Asians worldwide. The model minority myth doesn't just assume that Asians are universally intelligent or rich, it also assumes that we're able-bodied and don't suffer from mental illness.

NO ONE talks about mental health among Asians. NO ONE talks about disabled Asians. Why? Because everyone believes that we're rich and smart enough to access healthcare.

Newflash: WE AREN'T

"The Forest" had an opportunity to address an issue that is LITERALLY killing Japanese citizens by the thousands. An issue that would have hit home with many Asian-Americans who also suffer from mental illness and depression. But instead of reaching out and confronting a problem that exists and is on-going, Hollywood turned it into a horror movie and whitewashed its cast, thus dehumanizing not only Asians around the globe affected by mental health, but those who have already committed suicide.

The Martian’ Slammed Over ‘White-Washing’ Asian-American Roles

The Media Action Network For Asian-Americans has criticized director Ridley Scott over “white-washing” Asian-American roles in “The Martian.”

The watchdog group, in a statement issued Thursday, said the ethnicities of key characters in the movie are significantly less Asian than their characters in the 2014 novel by Andy Weir.

Scott’s reps did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“This feel-good movie, which has attracted Oscar buzz, shouldn’t get any awards for casting,” said MANAA founding president Guy Aoki.

MANAA noted that Weir describes NASA’s director of Mars operations Dr. Venkat Kapoor as an Asian-Indian character who identifies religiously as being “a Hindu.” The group pointed out that in Scott’s film, his name is changed to Vincent Kapoor, and he’s played by British black actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who says his father was “a Hindu” but that his mother was “Baptist.”

MANAA also noted that Mindy Park, described by Weir as Korean-American, is played in the movie by Mackenzie Davis, a white, blonde actress.

The group noted that both characters play crucial roles in NASA’s attempt to rescue astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) and work together on the rescue with the director of jet propulsion lab Bruce Ng (played in the film by Benedict Wong).

“Was Ridley Scott not comfortable having two sets of Asian Americans talking to each other?” said Aoki. “So few projects are written specifically with Asian American characters in them and he’s now changed them to a white woman and black man. This was a great opportunity to give meaty roles to talented Asian American actors — and boost their careers — which would’ve enabled our community to become a greater part of the rescue team.”

MANAA pointed out that Scott had been criticized last year for casting white actors such as Christian Bale and Sigourney Weaver in the lead roles for “Exodus: Gods and Kings” and dark-skinned Middle Easterners in the secondary, servile and villainous parts.

The group cited several other instances of Hollywood movies in which actors portrayed characters who had been Asian-American in the source material, such as “21,” “The Last Airbender,” “Aloha” and the upcoming projects “Ghost in the Shell,” which will star Scarlett Johansson, and “Doctor Strange,” in which Tilda Swinton will portray The Ancient One.

“This insulting practice of white-washing has got to stop,” said MANAA president Aki Aleong. “Alarmingly, it has been increasing in frequency. Today’s audiences expect multi-racial casts in entertainment, as they reflect the multi-cultural environment in which they’ve grown up. In fact, three of the television series that are doing very well this television season star Asians actors: ‘Fresh off the Boat,’ ‘Quantico,’ and ‘Dr. Ken.'”

Black people have plenty of input. The input is if something bad happened it was the whit man's racism. This is what the black community's main voices continually remind everyone of.

Actually, to me, it had nothing to do about what race the person who made the statement. It was just an ignorant statement.

AND she had a few valid points on how minorities shouldn't scuff at being excluded in nominations if their performance was not up to par. It was up until she brought up there should be no black history month that she lost her (already weak) credibility.

So no recognition or celebration of a culture’s history?

And Black History Month, as well as other Cultural history recognition, is a VOLUNTARY recognition. THERE IS NO LAW SAYING YOU HAVE TO CELEBRATE ANY CULTURE.

As Americans we have the right to celebrate different cultures, religions, social groups, etc. In fact, in America you can create your own religion and dedicate a month to celebrating it. Even if it means siting naked in your living room playing a banjo in front of a statue of Ronald McDonald.

What Stacy did in her statement was go against the basic rights of a human and an American by saying, “You should not be celebrating your (insert your belief here).”

Independence Day: On July 4, 1776 the United States of America declared its independence from Great Britain. Through generations it has morphed from an anti-British-rule celebration to a celebration of what makes us the USA.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each September 15 - October 15 in the United States of America to recognize the contributions made by people of Hispanic descent and to celebrate Hispanic culture. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 because it is the anniversary of 5 Latin American countries' Independence Day: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

German American Heritage Month: Beginning on October 6, 1987 as German American Day, the culture and achievement of Americans of German descent is now celebrated during a month-long period between. Established in 1995, German American Heritage Month spans these dates so as to encompass festivals like Oktoberfest and Steuben parades.

Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgender History Month is celebrated in October. The month of October was chosen because National Coming Out Day (October 11) was already established and a widely known event. LGBT History Month is intended to encourage honesty and openness about being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

Italian Heritage Month is set in October to coincide with Columbus Day. Italian Heritage Month celebrates the many achievements and successes of not only Americans of Italian descent, but also Italians living in America. America was named after an Italian (Amerigo Vespucci). It is also important to note that language plays a very large part of this celebration as it is thought of as an intrinsic part of Italian culture.

Polish American Heritage Month is celebrated each year in October to commemorate the contributions to American society made by those of Polish descent.

Native American Heritage Month was initially celebrated in 1916 by the state of New York. It was not until 1990 that then President George H.W. Bush established it as a month long festival. Not only does Native American Indian Heritage Month showcase the rich culture of the native people of this land, but also honors those American Indians that have suffered injustices. Therefore, we celebrate all Native Americans during the month of November.

AIDS Awareness Month: In December, we honor those who have become infected by the AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) virus by helping Americans become more aware of it. Caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since 1981, not just in the United States, but all over the world.
