Without sounding too morbid, what have you decided will happen to your children should - heaven forbid - anything happen to you and your SO? Have you written it officially? Did you ask the person or will it be like in the movies where the newly appointed guardian only finds out last minute?

A few weeks ago all of the shows and films that came on were about parents passing away and their children being passed about and it got me thinking what would we do. Naturally we would never want him going in to the foster system and then I thought about which family member/s he would thrive with. It dawned on me that just about none of our families would have the time for him or follow our wishes. My husband contracts and before that he was military and so that puts our friends out of the running since they're all in the same boat.

In the end it narrowed down to my older sister and my older brother. My sister is a mental health nurse and very world wise. But she's never wanted children of her own so I couldn't see her wanting anyone else's. My brother is in IT, his lady is from Canada, and we have so much in common. The conversation went like this "Bob if anything happened to us would you take Lamb please?" Without hesitation he said "You don't have to worry about anything. I'll be his God Bob (his nickname is Bob) instead of his God Father." At the advice of a lawyer we'll be putting it in writing so nobody else can claim him. We've not told anybody else to be honest, I suspect they'd all feel offended.

It was actually, despite making me feel so so sad at the thought of having to make that kind of decision, quite a weight lifted to know he'll be looked after in any event. Though my brother has yet to find out he'd get our dogs too lol

That is a concern for me too; I have no siblings (and if I had, they;d be far away and speaking a different language...), and I really dislike one of my husband's siblings and do not think they could handle our autistic son. We actually ended up asking a friend, as their family is loving and accepting of our son's special needs.

eh - when my son was younger, we set it up for my father. now that my son is over 25, he's not needing any parental unit.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
