Im a US citizen, now my wife(IR1) and kid(IR2) are gonna be here by March, Do I have to apply for my kid's US passport right after they get here?

What are the requirements?

Do i have to get her a social security # first?

And wait for their greencard to arrive before passport application?

She is on elementary at 3rd Grade, how do I choose a school for her? Do i have to contact my county, or are they gonna let me know?

Thank you!

have to ? no, but it can be advantageous, so to do.

ssn chasing is always fun, wait 2 weeks after arrival, then get into a SSA office.

greencard arrival before passport app? No! why? there is a visa foil inside of the passport, that, once endorsed at a POE, becomes a Temp I-551 document, validity of 1 year.

How to choose a school? There's a school district in which you reside, and they have a website - containing phone numbers.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Im a US citizen, now my wife(IR1) and kid(IR2) are gonna be here by March, Do I have to apply for my kid's US passport right after they get here? No, you can apply anytime you want. You will want to do it as soon as possible to prove that your child under age 18 is a US citizen. Much cheaper than an N-600 which is not necessary if you get a US passport.

What are the requirements? For what?

Do i have to get her a social security # first? No, but you will want to get her one as soon as possible. Often, the request for the SSN is on the DS-260. Sometimes, you have to go to the SSA. She needs a SSN to get paid for work. She needs a SSN to file a joint tax return with you.

And wait for their greencard to arrive before passport application? You can apply for a US passport for your US citizen child with the I-551 green card stamp on the immigration visa once the child enters the US. Your wife does not qualify for a US passport since she will not get automatic US citizenship when she arrives. US passports are generally only for US citizens.

She is on elementary at 3rd Grade, how do I choose a school for her? You take her and apply to the local school when she gets here. Bring her foreign passport with the temporary green card, her birth certificate, and your ID to enroll her in your local school. You choose the school in the district that you live in. Do i have to contact my county, or are they gonna let me know? Your county has nothing to do with this. No one is going to let you know about enrolling her in school. It's your responsibility as part of living in the US. Her education has nothing to do with immigration.

Thank you!

cause the parent was not a citizen when the child was born ? or failed the citizenship 5 year rule thingie prior ?

It's a nice flip, become a citizen after childbirth, parent needs to file the IR-2 but child has citizenship status after arrival (after paying the fee for a passport)

So you're saying that i dont have to pay/apply for my kids greencard? Because I already applied and paid for it.

correct - no need to pay the 165 fee at the ELIS portal for a greencard, as an endorsed immigrant visa serves as a temp I-551 document, validity of 1 year from POE date.

In essence, can apply for passport within that first month of arrival, and yer done on the kids.

as to getting a refund, since you already paid? sorry, unknown...
