Got social security number and got told im allowed to work. Is it true?

Lol i know!!! even if i was gonna post it i was gonna cover up the number . Couldnt figure it out so i cant post it anyways. Do you think its ok if i start working with the ssn that i have got ?

The SSN is valid for everything except work. You can only work if you have specific authorization from DHS. That would normally be in the form of an I-551 card (green card), or Employment Authorization Document, (EAD)

Yes, the gal I got my wifes misspoke too. My card clearly has the DHS auth which is the EAD too. I think its been reinterated here several times. SSN is used all the times w/o needing to work. Health insurance, adding to bank accounts, filing AoS and building credit history...etc.

My DoT couldn't have cared less, be fore warned to check your DoT, our page is not clear but Im waiting for EAD to even trying to get a NON Driving ID again. This may have been do the the name change (SSN has married name on it)

You can not legally work until you get your EAD.

Hey guys just got my ssn number on mail. Hehe happy! It says on the top " VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION. Then my ss number then my name which they used my married name and date. Im gonna try and figure out how to copy thr pic so i can post it so ya'all can c it

The card should say "Can not work without DHS authorization". That authorization IS the EAD.

So no, you can't work until you get your EAD.

Also, we never got his social security card, we applied for it within a couple of weeks of my fiance coming in. We went back today, they resent it, and went ahead and just gave him his social to write down.

The SSA guy did say that there are some people who end up on a list for further investigation, and that can cause the issuance of a SSN to take longer, in our case my fiances SSN was processed the same day he applied no problems other than mail possibly losing it. lol.


Edit: Whoops! Didn't see this thread was pretty much concluded!

But yes, you can do everything with the SSN except work, once my fiance wrote his number we went down to my bank and added him to my bank account, no problems.

Here is the thing that got me confused . Last week went to ssn office to get ssn for me and my twins. Everything went smoothly done. finally i got 2 papers. One is instructions bout when and how i get my ssn and the other one has my info mailing address plus ( ailen allowed to work).after reading it i was kinda you know surprised coz thats not what i have heard so i asked the nice man in the window if im legally allowed to work and he said yes ma'am.happy at that day but confused now.Anyways i read alot of things in here bout after entering u.s by k-1 that i have to wait like 60-90 days to get work permit after filling AoS or that i cant work. Now really confused.can i just strat working or wait for my work EAD. Tks in advance

Never ever listen to anyone from SSA ever.

They are quite possibly the single most incompetent department in the government outside of congress and the senate.
