Got social security number and got told im allowed to work. Is it true?

Hey vj flocks . Hope ya'll doing good.

Here is the thing that got me confused . Last week went to ssn office to get ssn for me and my twins. Everything went smoothly done. finally i got 2 papers. One is instructions bout when and how i get my ssn and the other one has my info mailing address plus ( ailen allowed to work).after reading it i was kinda you know surprised coz thats not what i have heard so i asked the nice man in the window if im legally allowed to work and he said yes ma'am.happy at that day but confused now.Anyways i read alot of things in here bout after entering u.s by k-1 that i have to wait like 60-90 days to get work permit after filling AoS or that i cant work. Now really confused.can i just strat working or wait for my work EAD. Tks in advance

You need to wait for your EAD.

eh - something's amiss,

as

1. K-1 visa holder is not allowed to work until have EAD or GreenCard in hand. whichever hits the mailbox first.

2. K-2 visa holders cannot even apply for a SSN until there's a EAD or greencard in hand.

for you, please study form I-9 - it details which documents prove up you are legal to work in USA.

I'll posit the ssa clerk was a tardo. But smart enough to know to look you up in the SAVE db.

Query - did you apply in VISA name or any new 'married' name?

Married name. Coz the guy in the window said i need to use my married name. And if im not allowed y did they give me a paper saying that im allowed to work. Just doesnt make sens. Im not in rush to work but just tryina understand things you know

always, when you apply for SSN,

if you go back the next day,

a clerk can (pick 1) :

1. give you the ssn (not the card, but the number) or

2. tell you of new problems.

since you applied in married name, that application is supposed to get sent out for 'DHS Verification', as that married name cannot be verified in the SAVE db system, and it's the SAVE db system that governs your availability to receive a SSN.

I say go back, apply in VISA name, ask clerk for SAVE DB lookup on visa name and A#; unless it's more than 74 days past the POE date.

1. Immediately, before filing for AOS. As a K-1 visa holder you are technically eligible to file for an EAD immediately when you arrive. However, this EAD will expire when you K-1 expires (90 days) and because of this and the wait time (>90 days) it is a waste of both time and money to bother applying. You will file as category (a)(6), "Nonimmigrant Fiance(e) of U.S. Citizen". (Where to file: mail, efile, walk-in -- only if local office allows)

Look at #1 on the EAD guide. Its states that you can file immediately upon entry to USA for work authorization. It's a waste of money and everyone just waits unitl AOS. But I think that is why the SS office tells you that. There was a thread on this awhile back but I cannot find it.

Guess im gonna wait this week which is that im suppose to get my ssn card on friday. So,if i didnt get it by then im gonna go back on tue again and c whats up. I will keep update in here n let you guys know whats up. Thanks for the infos again

Once again, do not take any immigration advice from SSA. NEVER.

You need an EAD to legally work. The EAD is free to file with AOS. It should take about 90 days to get.

Married name. Coz the guy in the window said i need to use my married name. No, you do not "need" to use your married name. You can use your maiden or married name. It's your choice which name you want to be your legal name. And if im not allowed y did they give me a paper saying that im allowed to work. People make mistakes. Don't trust SSA on immigration matters. Just doesnt make sens. Im not in rush to work but just tryina understand things you know It doesn't make sense because you are getting advice from SSA which knows nothing about immigration laws. The SSA agent is wrong. He made a mistake.

please study post #5, as you've made a mistake when you filled out the SSA-5, and this will affect you even receiving a SSN card.
