Hi everyone,

Yesterday i went for my medical at Knightsbridge. It all went well until the doctor asked me if i had EVER taken or tried drugs. I told her that once, when i was 16 (6 years ago) i tried a drug once. It was called MKAT, a drug that got pretty popular around my area at the time. It was a stupid mistake and it was an awful experience and i've never touched drugs since, and i never plan to again. She told me that the good news was that i was honest about it, but the bad news was that i had to do a drugs test which cost £50!

I was absolutely fine with it as i have nothing to hide (as i said, it was just the once!) and i'm pretty sure it'll come back negative, and the doctor said if it does, then it will not prevent me from getting the visa. However, i have been reading up on this situation and i have seen people say that the admission of taking drugs even once can be reason for denial or a 1 year ban. I feel that my honesty may have bitten me in the butt if this is the case.

Even if not, i have also got 'NO LIVE TRACE' on my police certificate from when i got a reprimand for shoplifting when i was 14. When i went for my J1 Visa they told me it wasn't relevant because i was a minor. Is this the case too when it comes to trying drugs just the once as a minor?

Has anyone had this situation? I would really like to hear about your experiences.

Thanks

Charlotte

Do you have a Subject Access Report from ACPO in addition to your police certificate? They generally will ask for that at the interview when you have a conviction on record. It has to say "No Trace" to be a totally clean record. The SAR takes longer to get, so order if you haven't already.

J1 is a non immigrant visa, K1 is looked at for these purposes as an Immigrant Visa.

Quick google suggests MKAT became illegal in the US in 2012 which might be a defence, otherwise it would be a medical issue.

You will need your criminal records.

Thank you both for your replies.

I am in the process of ordering the Subject Access Report now, hopefully it will come before the interview. Luckily i still have a form that i filled out when i got reprimanded in 2007, stating exactly what the offence was, so i will take that to the interview too.

I looked into what you said about MKAT becoming illegal and you were right (thanks so much!), in England it became illegal in April 2010 and 2012 for US. I took the drug around November 2009. Now i have already told the doctor about this, i'm not sure what difference it will make, but i plan to print out a page showing when it became illegal just in case they ask about it.

My fiance seems to think that anything that happened under the age of 18 isn't looked at too seriously by immigration. But i want to be cautious just in case.

The doctor clearly said to me that if the drug test comes back negative, i will be absolutely fine. So i'm hoping she is right!

If you have something stating the offense and date, that should be enough for your interview. Most people don't have that. They just want to see something on paper rather than you telling them your verbal version. Anything that you ever did is important to immigration. In future applications you will be asked have you ever been detained, convicted, etc and you have to answer yes. A guy on here from Cambridge had to get records from the UK about a prank incident from when he was about 12 yrs old for his interviewer at citizenship time.

Your one time self-admitted use will not delay your visa. People have admitted worse illegal drug use one time and were OK. Wonder if you rang up Knightsbridge and informed them it was not an illegal drug when you tried it, would the Doc change your report? Probably not.
