Newbies to the US from Canada: Anyone else having trouble adjusting?

Because my daughter has braces she can't have candy like she used to. Now even the sweet potatoes I made were too sweet. Makes me wonder what normal food would taste like if I stopped anything with sugar.

I find many things here are too sweet.. Both in people's cooking and in packaged food (Sandwich bread is one that comes to mind!)

For those comparing a US Gyro to a Canadian Donair (east or west versions) - there is no comparison!! The sauce makes the meal.. plus I think they spice the meat differently too.

I did find recipes to make donair sauce online. Maybe those missing it, try and make it? If I ever attempt, I will make a special post in the Canada forum

The meat is pretty much the same. Sauce is different. Make your own tzatziki if you like gyros or donair sauce if you like that. It's pretty easy.

So then what's the difference between a Greek American Gyro and a Greek Canadian Gyro? It's been a long time, but every time I got gyro's in Canada they are pretty much the same as they are here. Donair sounds like a Canadianized version of a döner kebab which is what I have had from stands in Poland and see frequently all over Eastern Europe. Gyros are generally in the pita bread with Tzatziki sauce, while a döner kebab can be on rice or on bread or in my case similar to a pita bread but still different than a gyro.

I have no clue what a donair is as it's neither the döner kebab or the gyro which are all over the world? So my assumption is it's some Canadianized version of a actual döner kebab and gyro mix, is that correct?

Duh I just did the research after I posted the above.

So a Canadian donair was invented in Canada and is a take off the idea of a Gyro (not a Döner). Some guy couldn't sell traditional Gyro's and so used beef instead of lamb and made a new sweet sauce instead.

So maybe it's a localized thing in Canada and not everywhere. When I lived in Canada I had never heard of this until now so that's why I was getting confused since I know the gyro and döner kebab are the authentic food.

I'll actually be in Montreal in July for the first time in my life, maybe I'll try and seek one out and see if it's any good or not...

Montreal mostly has gyros (pronounced yairo--try Kojax!) and I think the donair is a Maritimer thing? but there are probably other places you can get them.

Arahova on St-Viateur has the best gyros in Montreal - for those having to go to the interview. St-Viateur bagels and Dieu du ciel brewery are nearby. Hungry now!

Donair is popular in the maritimes (I think Nova Scotia claims the best and they are good!) Alberta is huge on them. I had not heard of them in BC, but I was a kid. I am pretty sure you can get them in Sask as well.. No Idea about MB,ON, QU though.

Donairs in Halifax or Dartmouth are the bomb !! My mom was born their and we visit family there and we always stop for some "stinky meat" is what my family calls it !!

There are a lot of Greek restaurants here. The best one if you live in Denver is right across from the Capitol building that I live near. We also have a decent Czech, Polish and German community as well here...
