The donuts at the shop around the corner from me are pretty much the best I've ever had. They are HUGE and fresh and perfect.

I've been doing fine without the Tim's coffee.

Tim's to me was mostly a meeting place for coffee dates with Friends. I do have a lot of memories of it through my life in Winnipeg. There certainly aren't any Tim's near me down here in California.

+1! i agree! tims is defintely a meeting place.. i have never heard of someone in america want to go hang out at dunkins for hours lol and tims has just regular meeting groups where people just show up and hang out! the donuts used to be AMAZING in the 90s when they had bakers and made the daily.. the apple friters were to die for! but of course, they had to get rid of bakers and now the donuts come frozen and are just preheated:/ way to ruin a good thing!!! the coffee and ice caps are great for a average price.. i mean starbucks is so overpirsed and it is more of a coffee shop and people go there to study.. which i NEVER understood bc they play that annoying funeral music that does not allow me to concentrate on my work.

it was so cool to walk to tim hortons and hang out for an hour or two and walk home haha and the breakfast sandwiches and soups are really good as well:)

i literally think in LA 7-11 has some great coffee and it is super cheap!! 1.25 if you refill a mug.. hazelnut, vanilla and big energy are my favorites!!!

if you ever come to LA you should check out redondo beach cafe! it is owned by ex cfl players from montreal and they have tim coffee, poutine, mtl smoked meat, nainamo bars and show all the canadian hockey, baseball and football games! it is a great little spot when you are craving something canadian:) they also celebrate all the canadian holidays!

I used to meet up with my friend weekly. 730, pem and grant. We had our usual meeting place. 15 minute walk for me, which was lovely on a summer evening. I don't think I ever really went to Tim's until I moved to Winnipeg in 2006. Before that, whenever we were in Winnipeg, we would stop at Robins Donuts on our way out so my mom could get coffee and us kids would get Robins eggs (donut holes)

7/11 coffee is pretty good. Here it's 99cents for a coffee refill. And it's pretty close to me, right by the donut shop ;)

I tried to explain to someone what poutine was a couple months ago so I thought about going up to LA to take them to Smokes poutinerie but that's an option too! We will be in LA in April, but not long enough for poutine. Going to the Jets vs Kings!

Is this Smoke's Poutine? I saw that the other day. I agree about the location not being the best.

YESS!! that is it! haha location isnt great:/ i think they were banking on getting a late night/drunk crowd! i drive around for work so i stopped in while i was working but i ended up eating in the car! not a great place to sit down and while the food was good, i like to sit and eat haha easpecially messy poutine! and its too far for me to make a trip out there:( the owners are really nice though! i won free tickets to go ese the premier of 'being canadian' and it was awesome!!!! free drinks/food and tons of celebrites were at the premier incl. jimmy kimmel!!! they even had a drink called 'biebers beaver' lolll i suggest all you canadians living in america watch Being Canadian if you can get it online!!!!! it was pretty funny that all the best comedians are canadians yet all the best death metal bands are english:/ haha defintely fitting canadians are comedians as we can handle jokes about ourselves!!!!

That is awesome!!! Get to LA Live early!! I suggest yardhouse for a great happyhour but it gets full by 5!!!! although winnepeg wont be a super packed game:/

if you do end up in LA you MUST go to redondo beach cafe!!! smokes is OK but nowhere to sit:/ and trust me RBC is FULL of canadians! ahaha you will defintely notice the 'friendly' ambience as soon as you walk in!!!

oh, and also for my CA people... Sprouts sells cheese curds!!!!! and they are freaking yummy! so get some cheese curds and get fries and gravy and you can make your own poutine:) they are in the cheese section (in those plastic containers).

Sprouts have cheese curds! Oh my gosh, why did I not know that already. I think the closest one to me is a little bit far, but I'll make the trip once in a while to get it.

I have been to the Smoke's Poutine in Mont-Tremblant, but I thought the poutine was just ok.

They definitely were trying to attract the drunk crowd in that area of Hollywood.

Guys, I need your input. We're all super familiar with the Canadian snacks that we can't find here but I need some suggestions on US flavours/snacks that we don't have in Canada slash aren't readily available to bring over when I visit home. I know there are a ton and this is for a friend who's a bit of a junk food connoisseur (if you can even call it that haha). I've already got red velvet oreo's, mallomars and entenmann's black and whites on my list but am kind of drawing a blank for anything other than cookies as I've tried to (mostly) steer clear of the junk food aisles since coming here.

After living in the US for 9 years, I miss a bunch of stuff from the states more than I missed Canadian stuff while living down south.

One thing my family keeps getting asked to bring up with us [via car/truck at least] is cases of Cherry Coke. Oh and the cheap premium Alcohol :)

I'm not going get into the sticker shock at the grocery stores in Vancouver, I moved from California back to BC while my green card is processing and .. well my grocery bill pretty much doubled across the board. Whee.

I almost fell over the first time I went to purchase Crow Royal in Canada, it was about double what I pay in the states. One thing that is definitely not cheaper in Canada is booze. I always bring a bottle of Crown Royal and a case of beer with me when we travel across the border now.

You could try looking for regional favourites - in Washington I like to get Tim's Cascade potato chips, Aplets and Cotlets and local drinks (from all the orchards). I'm sure there's more but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Hi Everyone :)

My first time seeing this thread! I have to say after a year(we crossed in a year ago today, actually!) we're still both having problems adjusting. I'm from Halifax, he's from ND, we lived together in Halifax for ~5 years. He wanted to move down to farm on his family farm, which we both hated. Now he's back in engineering but in the oil fields and works a crazy schedule, which he is loving. I don't work because otherwise I'd never see him. I'm going to start doing school part time(online) for something to do.

We're both having trouble meeting anyone. The town we live in is mostly oil working families, so people move like CRAZY. Of all the people he works with, he's the only one that is from ND, and is also the only one that actually lives here. The rest fly up from TX, Colorado, etc. We did meet a couple in our building, but they moved away a month later when they got laid off. There aren't any groups to meet people unless you want to go hunting or have children...hopefully not the two together lol.

Hubby has mastered poutine at home, but I would KILL for food that tastes like actual food, PC dill pickle chips and a donair. :content:

Met 2008. Moved in together 2010. Married 2015. Baby Z joined us 2017 .
