Hello! I have been going through the K-1 Visa process with my wife who is a citizen of Japan. I am a US Citizen.

Before we married, she lived in the US for 2 years using a Work Visa. She filed Tax returns while she was here. for 2013 and 2014. She has a social security card with her maiden name and has "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION".

Her work visa expired, and she returned to Japan in 2014. I married her in December 2015 in the US through the K-1 Visa process. We have submitted information for her AOS.

I essentially have 2 questions, that are linked to each other:

1) At what point can/should we update her SS# to reflect her new name? And will it still be a "VALID FOR WORK ONLY W/ DHS AUTHORIZATION"? At the time that we did her now pending AOS, we also sent in the I-765 Application for Employment Authorization.

2) As I try to file my taxes, I am trying to file as status "Married filing jointly". I just got rejected by the IRS when trying to file my taxes. I strongly believe the reason it was kicked back is because the IRS doesn't recognize my wife with her new name. Do I need to wait until I have a result on her Status change to be able to update her Social Security card? And does that mean I have to wait for all of these items to happen before I can file my taxes?

Thank you so much in advance! This site has been a life saver as my wife and I have been navigating the whole Fiancé Visa and AOS process!
