Hey all,

I'm importing my classic car (1985 Austin Mini Mayfair) when I cross the border. I've called the border about importing this vehicle to the US and since it's older than 25 years there shouldn't be a problem importing it.

What is involved in getting a US title for my car (instead of my Ontario ownership)?

I'm planning to store it in my father in law's garage in a different state, so do I need to get a title in that state? Can I gift the car to him since I plan to store it with him for the next 6 months and he can get a title and licence it?

Antique and collector vehicles have different rules than modern vehicles as you won't need to meet the requirements of the EPA. It makes it a little easier to bring it in. The title work will be the same but you won't need compliance letters etc because it is over 25 years old. There are some differences with foreign vehicles vs. US-made vehicles that are coming back.

What state are YOU moving to? What state does your FIL live in? If you give it to him he is going to have to pay taxes when he titles it and then you'll have to pay again when you bring it to your state.

Your Ontario ownership is like a title. You need to find out what your state needs from you specifically. You will likely need an out of state VIN inspection first and then you can go to the title bureau.

It might be helpful to contact a broker who does this and pay a small fee to bring it in. If you would like to PM me I can probably help you with this.
