Hi everyone,

I will be entering the US on Friday this week, and was looking at the SSN paper work online and I don't understand if I should do it now or wait for the AOS to be completed.

I am entering on Friday on a K1 visa and will be in California.

Am I able to get it right away? Will I have all the proper paper work having just entered on a k1?

You should obtain it immediately.

Take your passport, I-94, a completed SS-5, and your (long-form) birth certificate to your nearest SSA office.

You can wait after aos to get an ss# but...

It is best to apply for an ss card/# a week or so after you arrive. So your soon to be spouse can add you to the bank account, health insurance ect. These documents you will need as additional proof/evidence when you file your aos. :)

Anyway, i also entered using a k1 visa. The only documents I had when i applied for mine were the passport (with visa and entry stamp), my i94 and of course the application form. Oh and i brought a copy of my birth certificate if they need another document for identification.

Hi everyone,

I will be entering the US on Friday this week, and was looking at the SSN paper work online and I don't understand if I should do it now or wait for the AOS to be completed. Follow the K1 Flowchart, see link below.

I am entering on Friday on a K1 visa and will be in California. Of little consequence, SSA is another Federal agency, go in on Monday.

Am I able to get it right away? Hopefully, in a couple of weeks you should receive your SS card. Will I have all the proper paper work having just entered on a k1? Hopefully, the I-94 used to be a sticking point, but it is getting better. Fill out the SS-5 online, print it out, take it, and the required documents to the local SSA office.

:guides: easily accessible at the top of the forum page. In particular, the K1 Flowchart: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1flow The VJ scheme of events still works best. Look in the SSN forum for more information: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/156-social-security-numbers/

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Completed: K1/K2 (271 days) - AOS/EAD/AP (134 days) - ROC (279 days)
