my personal opinion - even in a state where open carry is legal, there would be very few times i would do so. a crowded public place is not one of those places - but i will not condemn those who do.

Police by virtue of their profession actively seek out the criminal element, though, so that is worth remembering.

A person does invite police calls. There are many videos of police harassing people for open carrying, generally because they were called by people who didn't know any better and the police feel compelled to respond. I personally wouldn't do it. I think all states should have sufficiently accessible permitting for concealed carry. It sounds like Ohio has it backwards and allows open carry but requires further steps for concealed.

Yes, police do deal with a different element, but they are also more highly trained in self defense and awareness than the average Joe. I think a person who open carries is an easy mark for someone who wants a gun. And that puts themselves and anyone around them in danger every time they walk out of the house with the gun strapped to their waste.

From a practical perspective there is a reason a person would want to open carry, because it not only inhibits a stranger's desire to be aggressive but also shortens draw time if a person needs to defend themself. There is some look at me I'm an awesome cowboy aspect to it, but accidental shootings by people carrying are so infrequent as to be irrelevant IMO. As for others getting their guns I am not even sure I've ever heard of it. It's probably happened, but it's also a very small risk.

I think a lot of people's misgivings about it are the fact it reminds them of how many guns there are in the US, but that's more of an emotional argument than a practical one.

The unwanted attention, the identifying yourself as a target,.You are putting a spotlight on yourself. The number one rule is too avoid trouble not seek it out. Anyone who thinks open carry is a smart tactical option has watched too many movies. In most cases anyway. It's the same pricipal as when I go to the Phillipines. I don't wear my rolex, my wife does not wear her rings, I don't flash money around and carry I carry a decoy wallet, I don't venture into unknown surroundings without a Pinoy escort. I darn sure am not going to blend in, but I don't light my sign up either.

The same menality that struts around like a peacock with an open carry is the same personality type that gets a small amount of authority and abused it.
