I'll go as far to say that anyone in this day and age that thinks open carry is a good idea is challenged in the active brain cell area.

I think open carry is the best option for Patriots wanting to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights. I like to know up front when I am encountering people who feel the need to carry. I admit that I will be judgemental in my first impression.

Some folks have larger carrying compartments for their rifles than others do.

No like button but that was strong

As a middle of the road gun nut, I tend to agree. Tacticaly speaking it's dumb . Edited by Nature Boy Flair

Go big or go home I always say.

I was driving through Pennsylvania with wifey a few years back and we were stopped at a light, up pulls a guy on a motorcycle with what appeared to be a 9mm hand gun strapped to his waist. We both did a double take and then almost simultaneously said "that's ridiculous". Open carry in a civilized society is senseless and will only cause trouble imo.

Few people really open carry so I haven't studied the stats on that specifically but it might not be as ridiculous as it sounds open carrying a pistol. Other states have had it for a long time and if you google the numbers of gun crimes committed by people with carry permits (and try to extrapolate out the open-carriers, if possible) I bet you'll find exceedingly low rates of criminality.

Good luck!

It's not the criminal element of the folks who open carry I'm concerned with. I would gather that most folks who do open carry are law abiding citizens, no too bright mind you but law abiding nonetheless. Otherwise they would be unnecessarily drawing attention to themselves and I don't know of too many criminals that want the added attention. It's a complete lack of respect for the safety of the people around you to open carry, this isn't the wild west anymore. Any person who open carries puts everyone around them in danger, either by accidental shooting or someone else getting control of their gun. Other than acting like a blowhard and saying "look at me", there is no reason for anyone in today's society to open carry.

From a practical perspective there is a reason a person would want to open carry, because it not only inhibits a stranger's desire to be aggressive but also shortens draw time if a person needs to defend themself. There is some look at me I'm an awesome cowboy aspect to it, but accidental shootings by people carrying are so infrequent as to be irrelevant IMO. As for others getting their guns I am not even sure I've ever heard of it. It's probably happened, but it's also a very small risk.

I think a lot of people's misgivings about it are the fact it reminds them of how many guns there are in the US, but that's more of an emotional argument than a practical one.

so you have a link to back that up?

Here's a good article written by the president of a tactical training company called Active Response Training, he's also a 20 year police vet.

And this:

3) Getting your gun taken away is always possible! Most people who carry guns tell me “I never let a criminal get within 10 feet of me. I’m constantly aware of my surroundings.” It’s bullshit. They are deluding themselves. It’s physically impossible for one human to simultaneously scan 360 degrees at the same time. You always have to turn your back to something! Especially in a crowded public area, you simply can’t process all of the information fast enough to decide who is a threat and who isn’t.

Every year about 10 percent of the cops who are killed in the line of duty are killed with their own firearms. Cops are trained to be alert, they often work with partners, and they have the best retention holsters available. Yet they still get their guns taken from them! You think you can do better because you took a one-day CCW course? Understand reality. You can’t see everything and you can’t win every fight. Your gun can be taken and used against you.

Police by virtue of their profession actively seek out the criminal element, though, so that is worth remembering.

A person does invite police calls. There are many videos of police harassing people for open carrying, generally because they were called by people who didn't know any better and the police feel compelled to respond. I personally wouldn't do it. I think all states should have sufficiently accessible permitting for concealed carry. It sounds like Ohio has it backwards and allows open carry but requires further steps for concealed.

Good luck!

cops are required to have person to person contact while the average citizen is not.

when was the last time someone ran up to a cop and grabbed their pistol?

no, it happens during the subdue/patdown/handcuff session.
