For all of the talk about Muslims on this site, fundamentalist Christians, within their closed ranks, are just as bigoted and intolerant as Muslims are

i thought she was getting the axe because of her religious dogma, not for wearing a head covering.

we talked about this maybe 2 weeks ago? I found her fotos, yum yum !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Yep, per article:
the suspension was solely based on Hawkins theological views. Wheaton has "a distinctive Protestant evangelical identity, represented in our Statement of Faith," the school administration noted in that letter.
This is a Christian school. I wouldn't expect a Jewish school to keep a person on who started to veer to severely out of the Jewish faith, either.
At least they only want to kick her out and not behead her for leaving their standard of faith.

Good luck!

eh - if she was teaching the 'interfaith studies' classes or have the endowed chair for interfaith studies,

this firing would not make any sense.

just like all the other 'big' religions, they don't all hold the same beliefs. that's where it gets ugly. it wasn't until she said christians and muslims worship the same god that she had it coming. i have the exact same divide in my own family, there are some who are very liberal, and would completely agree with this assessment and then there are others who wholeheartedly believe that isis and true bible believing christians are getting ready for the ultimate e. vs w. war of all wars, as prophesied in revelation. all of them consider themselves christian.

Yep, not all religions are the same, nor are all proponents within a religion the same in how they see it and act upon it.

Good luck!

finally coming around, eh?

Oh, you. You're the one who chronically blocks all religions into the same and refuses to say one is worse than another. But with the last post of yours, my statement, and your affirmation of what I said I can see you no longer believe it (but as I said days ago I never believed you believed it anyway).

Good luck!

you want to know what i think? you still misunderstand my opinion. i keep trying to explain, and you're stuck on whatever point you're trying to prove. i'm not exactly sure, but i think you want me to announce that islam is worse than christianity. i won't do that because i maintain that all religion is equally horrid and equally worthless - across the board. how a religion motivates, for good or evil, is purely up to the individual. this is especially true in america, where we have the ability to choose what we dogma we internalize and what dogma we ignore.

i know you're going to keep clinging to your idea of what i'm saying, because you want to be able to hate on islam.

but really, i do appreciate your attempts to explain to me what i believe. lol.

ExPatty: "Yep, not all religions are the same, nor are all proponents within a religion the same in how they see it and act upon it."

elitesthuglib: "finally coming around, eh?"

(Implicit in that comment is that you agree "not all religions are the same" and "nor are all proponents within a religion the same")

yet later you say that

"maintain that all religion is equally horrid and equally worthless"

If different people hold different beliefs how can these beliefs all be "equally horrid and equally worthless"?

-------

So, you're right I don't understand your opinion because it's completely irrational and inconsistent. You disagree with yourself constantly.

it's not inconsistent at all and i don't see where i'm disagreeing with myself. it might appear that way because my personal beliefs on religion are not rational if i tried to apply it to the entire world, you're right there. i want to press a button and have religion 'poof - be gone' and that is never going to happen.

i maintain that all religion is equally horrid and equally worthless because religion is unnecessary. a person does not need a personal theology to be a good, moral person. it's make believe. it's make believe that gives people permission to do horrible things if they're of the mind to. and yet, the opposite is also true. there are very good religious people that help instead of harm others. those people, far outnumber those that use religion as a prop for their own crazy or agenda. but that speaks to the nature of humanity - not religion.

it's really just the reality of having a negative personal opinion about something so large and historically & culturally acceptable that it doesn't fit into the 'real world'. the real world is full of religion, full of people brainwashing their kids with religion so the cycle never ends..religion is here for the foreseeable future.

Wearing the hijab to "show support," and the far left actually promoting its use in the West and trying to pass it off as "normal" in the West is probably the most counter-productive way to "create" a version of "American Islam" consistent with Western values. I think this professor meant well, I just think she's incredibly naive and counter-productive. Plenty of American muslims would agree with me on this. What mainstream Islam should be doing is to move away from the Saudi and Iranian theocratic assumptions that the hijab is a symbol of being a "good Muslim." No one questions whether or not a Jew is a "good Jew" if he doesn't wear a yamukkah, and no one questions whether or not a Christian is a "good Christian" if their knees show.

The hijab has become a political symbol.

http://www.npr.org/2015/12/22/460729859/the-case-against-wearing-hijab-to-support-muslim-women

"ASRA NOMANI: [...] the headscarf has become a political symbol for an ideology of Islam that is exported to the world by the theocracies of the governments of Iran and Saudi Arabia. Just like the Catholic Church in the 17th century did religious propaganda to challenge the Protestant Reformation, these ideologies are trying to define the way Muslims express Islam in the world."

"NOMANI: [...], and so the hijab or a variation of the word shows up eight times in the Quran. And it never means headscarf. And so what's happened is that the identity of a Muslim woman especially is being equated to this piece of cloth on her head. And in that ideology there's a very fundamental assumption that people need to think very deeply about, which is do you believe that a woman is too sexy for her hair?"

I'd argue that the well-meaning far left is helping in trying to paint this picture.

this isn't true. there are entire congregations that believe any parent who allows their daughters to show their knees (or wear pants), are not proper christians.
