I am a US citizen and my fiancé is an African citizen. We will be vacationing in Mexico in Match and are trying to decide whether we should get married in Mexico and apply for a spouse visa or would a fiancé visa be quicker. Though we have talked and skyped for a year now Mexico will be our first meeting.

Fiancé visa is quicker. You need to have met before you can apply.

But with the fiancé visa, bear in mind your fiancé will not be able to work for at least 4 months. If that's going to be a struggle, then a spouse visa is better. Although it takes longer, he will be able to work as soon as he arrives.

Lagos will scrutinize you when marrying at the first meeting and be ready to explain why you didn't marry in his home country with his family

present. Get a couple more visits in while your case is processing whatever visa you decide to go with.

Also make sure what is required in documentation for a Nigerian and USC to apply for a marriage license in Mexico.

My husband and I met and married on the first visit. As well as other Nigerian wives met and married their husbands on the first visit.

It took us 11 months. My friend in Detroit married her husband in Dec 2014 and he was approved in 9 months..

I went back 2 times. My friend could not. My friend in Al went once and her husband was approved in 11 months.. It's tons of stories like this... I wouldn't say K1's are any quicker it depends on your service center.

But you will need to meet the family, Lagos is huge on pictures and a really good solid petition. Marrying in Mexico may not be the best idea but do what you think is the best.

K-1s are almost exclusively being handled by California Service Center at the moment so they are, for the most part, quicker than CR-1s.

Speed shouldn't be the only consideration. The financial costs and implications should be considered. A K-1 is, from start to finish, more expensive and there is the matter of the immigrant not being able to work for at least 3 months.
