Hi everyone,

So I know that it takes quite a few months to get a green card after you file for change of status (after getting married in the USA after fiance enters on the K1), but I'm curious about how long it would be before you can work? I've heard that when you apply for the green card you can include an employment authorization (EAD) so that you work while you are waiting for the GC. I'm confused about how this works, how long it takes and if you get some sort of card or authorization through filing the EAD? If anyone can enlighten me it would be super helpful.

Also on a completely different tangent - I'm just about to send off the K-1 package! I want to make sure that I make no mistakes, so if you all could tell me if I have the correct address to send the package to it would be really helpful. The address I have is:

United States Department of Homeland Security
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
USCIS
P.O. Box 660151
Dallas, TX 75266

Is this correct? And is this the right address no matter where I live in the USA (I'm from NC)?

Thanks so much!

That address is correct if you are sending standard mail

Utilize that site for proper information. Utilize visa journey for advice. EAD/AP can take quite a while or be processed quickly. We were lucky that we were chosen to bypass EAD and AP and get the green card just about two months after filing AOS.

You will get ur EAD card if you apply for it with the GC application, they say it takes 3 months to get the card but I seen people getting it in 2 months, you can apply for it as soon you get married and fill out the forms but it shows you still in the beginning of the process so focus on that first

And yes address is correct

The address is correct if you mail it at the post office. If you use FedEx or UPS, they can not deliver to PO Boxes. There is a stree address to use for those courier type carriers.

Yes everybody starts at one big clearing house for collecting the fees and doing an initial check that you sent everything. Then files will go to a USCIS service center for processing. You are not at Texas Service Center just because the lockbox for intake is also in Texas. Not the same.

Adjustment of Status. Correct you can apply for work authorization (free even) with your AOS application. In 60-90 days you will get a card that proves you are legal to work while you wait on your greencard to be approved. Remember, the quicker you marry and file your papers the sooner your 60-90 day clock starts ticking.

The above advice is correct regarding the mailing address for the K1 and the application for the EAD/AP included with your GC. The only thing I would add is that you will also need an SSN in addition to to an EAD or GC to work. You can apply for an SSN as soon as you arrive on a K1 as long as you have more than two weeks validity on your I94 from your K1 entry. Having this is also helpful when applying for a driver's license in many states, or setting up bank accounts.

Good Luck!
