Hi,

I read on https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/first-time.html

For first time passport application, a copy of ID is required to submit with application.

Just curious, do I need to get a replacement driver license first (since I will be changing my name and attending Judicial Oath Ceremony) to apply a passport, or can I use the driver license with my previous name on it?

Any of you did name change and applied passport can share your experience please?

Thanks!

You will have to show proof of name change if the name is different than what is on your birth certificate...when I applied I had to provide my marriage certificate in married name. The name on your ID will need to match what you current name is.

It shouldn't matter.

You'll need your photo ID and your name change certificate... the name change certificate links your old and new names. In other words, the name change certificate proves that the name you want the passport in now belongs to the person listed on your drivers license.

If you think about it, it could work the other way... in most states, you need to show some kind of ID to get a drivers license... so you could ask if you need to get a passport in your new name before you renew your drivers license! :-)

Thank you. I plan to apply for a passport right after getting naturalization certificate. I read some posts here, some folks had opportunity to do so after the Admin Oath Ceremony on spot. I just wonder if I will be able to do it with Name Change Certificate and current Driver Lincense after Oath.

I got my name in Driver License updated first, then applied for passport.

Thanks!

Yes.

Unless the person taking the application doesn't know what they're doing.
