Hello dear forum readers,

I've searched online for hours and couldn't find the answer for my question, I guess maybe no one has the same problem I have.

I am in the U.S. with K-1 visa, and filing for AOS soon. Unlike most AOS applicants, I have social security number. Because I was young and impulsive, I messed up my credit score, and now it is in the low 500s. :( This is not good because my husband and I want to buy a house in the near future.

I wonder...If I leave the SSN box blank on all of my applications for AOS, maybe I can apply for a new SSN once I receive the EAC?

Does anyone know if this is capable of being done?

Please do not be judgmental, we all make mistakes when we are young. Thank you :)

No, you can not apply for a new number

SS # is yours for life

Just straighten out the credit by paying or arranging to pay as much as possible

many companyies will work out a plan for you

and don't leave your SS # off your forms

follow the rules

immigration doesn't care about your credit report / they care about honesty

You would have to have a completely new identity in order to run away from your credit history, not just a different SSN. If you already have a SSN, and you get another SSN by fraud, you are committing a crime. These are not judgments, just facts of life. We all make mistakes when we are young and old. We also have to make up for our mistakes. At this time, you should face the challenge head-on, and research reputable companies that specialize in helping you improve your credit score.

Unfortunately that is not going to happen. ssn is for life so no chance they will change it. you might also be committing a lie of omission by not putting it on the form, either way once you applied for ssn the same number will be reissued and just so you know withholding information like your previous number from social security is tantamount to social security fraud. If you still want to proceed, check this page for valid reason for a new once.

First of all, you cannot simply apply for a new SSN just because you messed up your credit history. There are specific conditions under which you can apply for a new SSN and i don't think your case is applicable.

Furthermore, 500 is not that bad, it will bounce back fast if you keep your good credit profile from now on.

Haha. The things people ask on here. No you cannot create a whole new identity, so unfortunately the SSN you have is for life.

Now, the good thing is a low 500 is NOT bad!!!! you can EASILY build your credit to above a 600... you NEED to use your credit card every month but keep it below 30% and make sure you pay it off on time! also, i am learning, multiple credit cards are a good thing to have (if they give you one in the mail). DO not go to a store and have them pull your credit report as that will make your score go down. You can get it to a 600 in 6 months, so just put a cable/phone/internet bill on a credit card and pay it off every month!

GOod luck!!!

Google is your friend in this case. Just look for advices how to improve your credit score.. Don't stress too much, all can be fixed (I hope you don't have thousands of dollars ). Just make a good plan and follow it, it shouldn't take very long to reach good score again.. And then you can get your dream house :)
