Hi,

I'm currently on J1 visa - it will expire in April 21st plus I have one month grace period till May 21st. I want to change my status from J1 to F1. The question is, am I eligible to stay here if my visa expires at the end of May and school starts mid August? How long am I eligible to stay while I wait for the school year? Thanks for your help.

I think you can enter 30 days before your course starts so you have a gap.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Only if you can get legal status covering the gap between the two visas. If you do not, then you must leave.
