Change J1 to F1 - period between - is it legal to stay in the US?

Hi,

I'm currently on J1 visa - it will expire in April 21st plus I have one month grace period till May 21st. I want to change my status from J1 to F1. The question is, am I eligible to stay here if my visa expires at the end of May and school starts mid August? How long am I eligible to stay while I wait for the school year? Thanks for your help.

If you apply for Change of Status in the US before your status expires (at the end of the grace period), you can stay in the US for as long as the Change of Status application is pending. You cannot attend school until you've been approved for F1 status.

Thank you @newacct! I have heard that I should apply at least 45 days in advance - I guess because it takes some time to process the application. Also my friend said I should not be counting the grace period.
