Question about the SSN change.

My oath ceremony is next week.

Just wondering do I really need to wait for 10 days to change my name on the SS card?

TIA.

If you do a name changed, you MUST update you new name and citizenship status with Social Security Administration. IRS will compare their data with Social Security Administration so that if you don't want to screw up your tax return, then update with SSA is a MUST. Other agencies such as DMW (or DPS) will also check your social security before they issue a driver licence.

And YES, you should wait at least 2 weeks (I suggest) so USCIS can update your name and status on their system. Social Security office uses SAVE (The Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) Program) administrated by USCIS, to check you citizenship status. If they can't verify your status, you have to wait 2-4 weeks. They have to request with USCIS, and USCIS has to sit down and manually verify your status, then return the result back to SSA.

Another option for your, if you use your US Passport along with name change petition, SSA may change your information right away.

Good luck!

  • 2 weeks later...

Some say to wait 10 days but when I asked the IO during my Naturalization Interview, she said to wait 30 days but I think I'm going to try updating my SSA record after 3 weeks. :)
