Hello

I am planning to study in Guatemala which will be abroad but I am a permanent resident and the career that I'll be taking take around 3 to 4 years...and once I am done I want to come back and get my masters here in the U.S and plan to live here for the rest of my life..butI am concerned that my LPR will be revoked if I don't come to the US every six months or what not...can someone help me to explain how can I get the re-entry permit? And if after I come back will I have to wait another 5 years for me to get my citizenship? How much am I risking my LPR if I get the re-entry permit?

hi

if you come every 6 months you risk having problems with immigration entering the country, so you will have to get a reentry permit that allows you to stay out of the country for 2 years without loosing your lpr status

the reentry permit can be renewed for 1 time, so in all you can stay up to 4 years

once you return you will have to wait 4 years for citizenship

the form for reentry permit is the i131

hi

you will need to come to renew the reentry permit and stay in the us at least until the fingerprints (biometrics) are taken

you can request that the permit be sent abroad, but it does take time for biometrics
