Yep, the Visa in the passport is your GC until you recieve the plastic version

If you look at the Visa carefully it says it acts as a temporary I-551, an I-551 is GC

So all cool

Correct. For potential employers our foreign spouses can use the information about CR-1 visa, downloaded from the Internet and printed out.

I tried my LIN number on the USCIS documents that I have to track the green card and it didn't help me at all. It hasn't been updated with any information since May 2015, when they sent the information to DOS. Any other suggestions? I'm not having much luck tracking it. A little frustrated.

Mine didn't show much either!

It seems that the wait is anywhere up to 6 months

At my POE the CMP agent said it can take up to 6 months

But as for tracking it, hmmmmmmmm a little trickier

But as long as you have your valid Visa why panic?

Yeesh, 6 months? Also, to work, open a bank account, buy health insurance, etc. don't you need a SSN? And that only arrives a few weeks after POE right? I don't really get this system, what's the point of being in country if she doesn't have a SSN and, as a result, isn't a "real person" under the law??

The SSN is supposed to arrive in a couple of weeks, but as discussed on here, the method of ordering during the Visa process sucks!

I would get down your local SSN office and apply, most of us ended up doing that

Just take Passport/Visa and apply, saves waiting for something that may or may not come!

Wow..that's actually quite infuriating. Even after all the time and expense to get the spouse physically to the US, the process *still* isn't over. How long did it take you to get a SSN when applying in person?

Yeah it was a pain, I waited for 2 weeks after applying

I landed in the mid of Dec 2015. My problem is that I have applied for a education training in a institute and the institute is asking me the green card or the letter from USCIS about my processing of green card. I talked to USCIS help centre and the lady said it will take 60 days and she was saying that it is mentioned in the website as well.

Please can anyone help me out in finding where on website it is written that the green card will come after 60 days of applying the fees?

As I said earlier in this forum, your Visa acts as your temorary GC, it says it on the Visa, so show the college your Visa

I've not heard 60 days as a time scale, I've heard 6 months, mine took 3

Thank you Thozelle, ....DJ actually these are immigration matters and the visa stamps and notes on visa page on passport can only be read and understand and accept by immigration officers or immigration purpose guys. In public in US, nobody knows what so ever written on the visa page for one year or two they only know the word "Green card" and if you are new then proof in writing as an official letter in my name that shows green card is in process.... You can not make them understand... well but in my case ....by somehow i am finally able to proof my innocence. :)

Good to know, I guess in Los Angeles employers are a little more used to 'foreigners' my Passport/Visa was fine as my GC

My advise to all filing immigrant visa applications - DON"T check "send me the social security card by mail", when you fill out the electronic form on NVC website!

Our experience: we checked it. My husband arrived in the country on December 11th, we went to the SS office right away, where they told us, since we applied through the immigration, they have nothing to do with that, they can't even take the application now, we have to wait for the card to arrive for 5-6 weeks, until the end of January.

Last week we went to the SS office again. They took our application, saying the card would arrive within 5-10 business days. Today the card arrived. It took only 6 calendar or 3 business days.

SO, through the immigration service, like we see from this topic, the card can be received in 10 days upon the arrival earliest. Not to apply through the website and going to the SS office in person is the best option.

I think my wife and I got lucky with the Social Security card. We checked the "send me my SS card by mail" option, and got the card last Friday, i.e., less than 2 weeks after she entered the country.

Still waiting on the green card, but the SSN was way more important.
