I'm getting nervous. Fiance (beneficiary) is in current country with a student visa and needs a police certificate from his country of citizenship for our K1 interview. Turns out when he submitted the student visa petition, he had to submit a police certificate from his country of citizenship so he gave them the original document (this was almost two years before we knew each other). It's nearly impossible to contact the country that issued the student visa asking to get it back.

Fiance thinks as long as he has a copy (which he does), he's okay. However, I'm freaking out because everywhere I read, the embassy for the K1 interview wants the original document. Am I correct in freaking out or would we be OK with the copy? Note that fiance has never been back to his country of citizenship since he came into the country of his student visa. We also can't apply for a new police certificate from his country because it takes anywhere from 3 to 9 months to process since he's out of the country. Our interview is scheduled for June 22nd and I'm worried we won't pass the interview just because we dont have the original - just have a copy...

I'm pretty sure the police certificate needs to have been issued within one year. For example, my fiancé lived in London for 2 years about 5 years ago so he had to get an updated police certificate.

Ya your best bet would probably just have him fly back to his country and handle his business.

Oh man, we can't do that. If he goes back to his country of citizenship, he won't be able to come back to the student visa country. That country won't allow him to enter the country. And our interview is taking place in the student visa country. This all sucks. I can't believe we're going to be denied for something out of our control. If I knew about this since day one, I would have told him to go back to his citizenship country and we would've done everything through there. But since he's in student visa country, I wasn't sure if the visa center would've sent his application to citizenship country or student visa country.

Could he maybe request it online? Is his country of citizenship Canada? If I were him I'd call the RCMP and ask if they have any potential solutions considering his specific case. They may be able to help.

I've seen some cases were they will approve with a condition. So maybe request the police certificate now, take the copy he has and explain the situation and they might approve it saying we'll give you the visa when we get the police certificate.

Needs to be original copy, usually only valid for 6 months but varies by consulate. A copy from two years ago won't work I'm sure.

A Police Report has to be valid for the current year.
