Also late to the party, but I've been following this topic for awhile and getting even more excited for the next steps. We filed on January 11th. got our NOA2 on April 14th, and are waiting for our case number now. I was ready to start calling a week after we got it, but realized (shamefully late, considering all the reading I'd been doing) that I needed to renew my passport to meet the 'valid for 6 months post POE' requirement, so now I'm just gathering up everything else we'll need while I wait for that. I got the second worst part over with earlier this week - vaccinations, had a bit of a fever for two days after - and am now building up to the worst part, which is going to be getting a rabies shot for my cat and getting him ready to travel. Actually, if I really think about it, getting him ready is almost more stressful than getting myself ready

I'll probably call NVC at some point next week just to check on things, though. We're not at 35 days yet, but I'd rather be sure that nothing has gotten lost in transit. I also wish there was a way to check what kind of wait people are currently experiencing when it comes to interviews in Montreal, but I guess I'll have to wait until I get to that step to see for myself. I know that a lot of variables can come into play.

Good luck to everyone still going through all of this, and congratulations to all who are coming to/have reached the end of it!

Unexpected update: My fiance got a letter from NVC today with our MTL case number! It was dated May 10th, but I'm assuming it hasn't actually made it to the consulate yet based on the fact that it shows up as an invalid case number when I search it on CEAC. Oddly enough, I'd had an excited, fluttery feeling in my stomach about today since last night, to the point that I almost called NVC for the first time to check on things. On the one hand, it's exciting that I don't have to check USCIS anymore. On the other, the wait for my passport is likely going to drive me crazy because it's the only thing standing between us and being able to really get things moving once our case reaches the consulate.

This really is a hurry up and wait process and it's teaching me a lot about patience.

Finally got the interview scheduled yesterday! But it's not until June 24th! I'm happy it's scheduled but bummed it's so far out for a couple reasons. My youngest was really hoping he'd be here for her birthday. My children really look to him as a step father already. Their dad is a dead beat drug addict :( and doesn't show any desire to be in their lives. Her birthday is a week after he has the interview. Also interview is on their fathers bday...bad luck? My fiance thinks they gave him the earliest available although in the ds application it does ask when you plan to leave. He put the 30th of June that's a week prior. Do you think that's why they picked that date....?

No, I think they took the first available they had. Sweden also have 6 weeks wait time BUT you can get lucky and get a cancelation here so maybe e-mail them and let them know he is available if an easier date comes up...

Wow sorry to hear about the long wait times for interviews.

I'm suddenly very thankful that it wasn't hard to schedule ours. I've been very nervous about the interview that I've started checking every night if I have all the documents I need lol. I keep reading Hank's and Greenbaum's guide over and over just to be sure. My fiance is doing his best to calm my nerves.

Question, has any one looked further into the steps after you're married to convert into green card status? I read you want to start that process asap before the 90days because if it's not started soon enough they can be deported in the meantime and have to come back over. Can anyone elaborate on that?

That's not correct, the visa requires you to marry within 90 days of entering the United States, once married the beneficiary is in a kind of limbo until AOS is filed, no official immigration status but they are not going to be deported :)

It's a good idea to file for AOS (adjustment of status) as soon as possible because the beneficiary can't work, get a drivers license (in some states) etc until they get the EAD (employment authorisation card) - just don't make travel plans outside of the states until you are in possession of AP (advance parole)if you leave without that then yes you will have to start all over with a spouse visa..

you can start filling in the paperwork for AOS while you're waiting for the visa, gives you a good head start and means you don't have to do it once you are together and can spend your time doing other things :)

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey
