SS verify immigration status

just went to SS office to change to my card to my married name and to update my immigration status and they told me they have to verify DHS records. if anyone had that experience, can you let me know how long the verification process took? they told me 2 weeks for verification and 2 to get the card-my husband and I would like to file taxes soon. thanks!

It took about six weeks for SSA to verify the USCIS information and send Claudeth a new social security card with her married name on it. When she first applied it only took a week to get the card so maybe the inquiry to USCIS takes five weeks? I hope this is helpful to you.

When you change apply to change the name on your social security card, keep in mind that the number on the card does not change. The only thing that changes is you get a new card with the new married name. You already have your social security number, which is all you need to file your income tax return.

do I file using my maiden name or married name? what if I file taxes under married name and my social security is not updated in my maried name yet?

Use your married name. That is your name. The SS card will fall into place later.

I applied for my social security card on February 27th (and received a notice that they needed to verify my immigration status). On March 8th they mailed me a letter saying that I had applied etc and that I would get the card in 2 weeks. So for me it took about 10 days for them to verify it and it'll probably come in the mail next week or the week after.

Thanks guys for all the input-the lady at social security did say that verification should be faster now because they can do it on-line!
